I bought my winter daily/beater BII about 2 months ago, in that time when I go to start in the morning to warm it up, it fires up super easy but the problem is it doesn't engage the fast idle. Its randomly done it once or twice on the first attempt, and a few times It would happen on the second try after it fired up once than died. Right now it will fire up first try and run but super low idle barely going or the same thing but on the second attempt.
The only automatic choke mechanism im familiar with is the mechanical system on a Quadrajet using a thermostatic coil. My 81 Mazda 626 has an electronic choke but I havent had to fiddle with it.
Messing with it the last few days it appears the choke its self works great, no issues there. There is what appears to be the fast idle cam and arm mechanism that I can move and jiggle around and it doesnt seem to lock or engage in any spot.
I started adjusting the screw on the back passenger side of the carb on a cold start and start I figured it out when the idle went up, but that doesnt seem to be the solution as it never goes down, is this an adjusment to override the automatic idle system? Or is the fast idle not working right?
I tried holding the arm up and turning the screw in so it contacted what I think is the cam and locked it in place, but still it wouldnt come off fast idle when warmed up and id hit the throttle.
Right now I have that screw backed all the way off and the truck idles totally fine apart from not engaging fast idle on cold start.
The arm has a bolt in the very top that appears to be some sort of adjustment but im not sure for what, I havent messed with it.
Does anyone have any ideas of what might be the issue? Is fast idle controlled by the automatic idle system or is it mechanical like on most other carbs?
