Don't sweat it, man. That's where we all started. This is my first time ever dealing with wiring thankfully it’s a old rig so it shouldn’t be to hard but how do I know what types of cables and what not to buy ?
The best advise that I can give you, if you're just starting out, is to check the parts stores in your area, and find one that is willing to earn your business. If you can't drive the truck there, go in and tell them what vehicle you have, and what you're needing to fix. The good ones will work with you, and try to get you the right parts. If you get the bad vibes in one store, simply just walk and try another store. You'll very most likely find a good store that wants you for a customer, and will try steer you right. A lot of good retailers out there have counter people that'll go out and look at your vehicle to help you get the right parts. A lot of them are also able to give you advise on how to do the repair, too.
Give it a shot at getting at least the new engine ground cable. Once you have it, see how far you can get with putting it on. You have questions, or get stuck, just post up here.
Good luck!
