Is it safe to adjust my valves while the 2.9l is idling? I put new heads and all new rocker assembly on my 2.9l and the tick is killing me slowly. I cant stand my little buddy ticking its heart out like he needs help.

Any valve adjustment I've ever done required each piston be in a specific location during the adjustment and never running. I can't see how doing this with it running is going to end well.

Lol. It's somewhat safe. I have a set of valve covers I modified for the task. Odds are you're going to lose a lot of oil from it. I know I did when I tried.

Mind uploading a recording of it ticking? Should be on stone cold start, start the camera before starting the truck, and have it aimed at the engine when it fires up.

Sometimes it's lifters. Sometimes it's injectors, and sometines it's a 2.9 doing 2.9 stuff. They have their quirks ?

I did it years ago on a friends truck... by nature of the adjusting screw... it's difficult at best to do. But it did help.

As PJ said... it will make a mess and probably smoke like crazy.

Needing to do all that work anyway, you'd have been better off to swap in a 3.0. 183,000 miles on mine, and she doesn't tick. Gets better mileage than my 2.9 did, too.

I did the lifter adjustment according to trs guide when I installed the heads. It's got a mild tick at idle and when it gets warm or I drive it it gets and stays louder.

I'd have to find 1. Free 3.0
2. Free 3.0 ecu and wire harness
3. Free time

I figured it would be messy I guess I'll just take it to someone who's got more experience with the 2.9l till then I'll deal.

You forgot a trans.

But early 3.0s can be run on 2.9 computers and vice versa.

Hm OK. So... What are you using for oil? Filter? And new cam and lifters, or just lifters?

Did you inspect the adjusters and push rods really close? They do wear...

Did you disassemble the rocker shafts and inspect those close also? Lack of maintenance will plug them up and then the shafts and rocker arms suffer...
