Soul crushed and seeking advice on starting problems


Does the starter feel like it locks into its mounting location? With no bolts in it, can it slide up and down or side to side? Just trying to figure out if maybe the wrong bolts got used to mount it a long time ago
 
Hello, all.
Long time again with no update...

I have made a deal with a friend, and I will have a (small) garage that I can hog to myself for up to 2 months.
I am going to try again, but this time I will be more prepared and take my time. I'm also going to save my PTO specifically to free up extra time for the truck.

For sure on my to-do list is:
- New pushrods and rockers
- Resealing valve cover, intake manifold, ect
- New rear main, all new clutch components
- Replacing water pump, hoses, radiator, and also an e-fan conversion is very temping for me especially because at some point I would like to retrofit A/C into the rig

I would like to either replace or attempt to rebuild my transmission as it's always had issues. Specifically 3rd/4th are noisy under light load (kinda like a rattling sound) and it won't go into 5th.
Both I believe are related to it's previous DIY rebuild, lol. For sure 5th as my friend did confirm it never went into 5th after they did the work.
The transmission doesn't grind and it goes into all the gears smoothly (ignoring 5th), so I'm kinda doubtful that it would need many internal pieces replaced. There is only roughly 5 years of driving on these syncros as far as I know.

So I think in theory on the transmission I can probably only replace the seals and bearings while I am tearing it down.

Thoughts, opinions?
I know there are quite a few videos on YT regarding disassembly and reassembly of the M50D so assuming a fair time constrain and that I pick up any needed tools it seems doable

Good to see you’re still trying to get everything resolved with it!

I’ve been mostly focused on my workshop rather than fixing my rigs, other than a few random days here and there to squash issues on what I’m driving. I’ve had a whole new steering linkage for my Choptop sitting in boxes for like a month now, lol.

I did an electric fan on my Choptop awhile back and I have mixed thoughts on it. I ended up wiring it on a three position switch (auto on, off, always on) with an indicator light. It works as long as you remember to turn it on, but in the auto on position where it’s supposed to cycle off the temperature sensor, it never shuts off once it kicks on. I need a mechanical temperature gauge to try and determine what’s going on. I’ve also thought that maybe it would be nice to have an electrical controller for it that you wouldn’t have to remember to turn a switch on and off, where it would automatically come on with the key and have a cool-down after you shut the vehicle off. I haven’t had time to work on that though.

You think that's too much for ~2 months?
Honestly the specific priority in that time for me is the transmission, clutch, and similarly placed items. I am wiling to do everything else in chunks over time so long as I can at least get the dang thing to a good place with being able to start.
But I did figure I would at least be able to tackle that + the rocker arms, push rods, and general resealing in that timeframe. This is still a few months down the line so I should have a boatload of parts already here once the time comes and hopefully won't be stuck waiting on anything.

When I replaced the flywheel last year it took I think 3 weeks, maybe 4 at that was while working full-time, not having all the needed tools, being stuck on a part or two, and also literally taking the time to put the truck up on jack stands and then take it back down every day just so it wasn't looking trashy.

I guess I don't know how long it'll take to tear that transmission apart and put it back together, though. I will be looking up what tools I need and acquiring those too...

Well I'm foolishly attached to the truck so I'm more likely to park it and save up for a few years to make it someone else's problem than completely give up, lol.
But.. idk, I was pretty close to success previously even with hoops and hurdles. My hope is that with this being a planned fix and not a ASAP act of desperation I can set myself up for success.

At a minimum I'll fail again and it'll just add to the story, lol.

Other goodies I have been acquiring for the truck include but are not limited to:
- A nearly $400 set of used door panels that are in quite nice of shape.
- All new positive, negative, and starter motor cables.
- New seals and weatherstrip for the doors.

There will be more. A lot of the things will be gradual as funds allows, but I'm gonna fix up the interior too as it's a disaster right now.
The exterior however will get a lot less TLC. As long as it it's not gonna rust away, isn't smashed in, or all different door panel covers I care a lot less strongly about that.

I'm not sure exactly what you did, but I was looking at a controller like so:

And I heard there's a taurus fan that will perfectly fit the ranger radiator which means proper fitting style fan shrouds, nice!
