Soul crushed and seeking advice on starting problems

Well it's been almost exactly another month. I found some time off with motivation and decent weather..
Tried to reinstall the starter and no dice. It's not meshing correctly.

I think I am going to throw in the towel and that I will be saving up my pennies to take it to a shop and have them take a look at it since I clearly am either the cause of the problem or am failing to identify it. That and the property management seems to now be paying a little bit more attention to the vehicles in their lot and I don't want to get on their bad side by having the truck up on jack stands with the transmission out..
in your case, was this truck always a manual? is the block plate for an auto or a manual?

Yes it was a M5R1 equipped truck from factory. To the best of my knowledge this is still the original transmission.

pilot but the starter works perfectly...little left...or little right...and shit gets out of hand fast. of course...you would have to loosen it up and play with it rotationally to see what you see....which may be nothing.

What would I need to loosen and play with rotationally?

the other thing i have been running into....especially with winter conditions and people using summer in a can....or cosby sauce....starting fluid if you must...is that the ring gear on these junk ass parts actually slips and walks out of position a bit.

I am a bit afraid this might be the cause. The old girl def got a good bit of the summer in a can

to be clear you have tried both auto and manual starters?

i was just talking about this with Jim recently

Too bad you’re not closer, I’d say we could drag it over and figure it out

I have only tried manual starters. Would I want to try an auto starter?
Edit: Jim as in the Jim that started TRS? If so that's awesome. Regardless I really do appreciate everyone on there. Amazing forum and community

I wish! Would be nice to have someone more experienced and knowledgeable to look at it with me

Yeah, that Jim is who Bobby is talking about. Bunch of us talk with him frequently. We all need to figure out how to resolve your problem so maybe you can join us for an event sometime, lol. I’d say that I’d be willing to pack up a truck with some tools and come out for a couple days but I don’t have anything good for a long road trip at the moment, everything is some degree of broken currently and I’m trying to work on my shop instead of my trucks. Not sure who all we have out your way that might be able to lend a hand.

Wow that's cool I wasn't expecting the Jim that started TRS to hear of my problems. And I would LOVE to join in for an event at some point. Besides demolition derbies I have never been to any kind of car event.

PA to northern ID is an awfully long trip. Take a couple days just to get here lol. And oh yeah I hear you there! My least broken vehicle currently is a 91 E150 with a 302 and a roof raise to be used as a camper. It's actually a really cool van and in a different life I would love keep it, but now that the weather is getting nicer I will be cleaning it up and putting it up for sale which will give me money to sink into the ranger. Hopefully with some more to spare so I can have pay off my remaining CC debt but that's clearly a secondary priority to fixing the truck lol

I'm nearby but I'm not sure I could really do anything for you, other than loan you a ford diagnosis procedures book. I do have a couple of questions though.
1. Is this a swap truck? Some pictures look like a swap truck, it could matter if things are routed poorly
2. Did you pull the codes? what were they? The information if spread across 4 pages now so I might have missed it.
3. You said you replaced the pip, what did you replace? was it this

The tach output of the EDIS is also how it talks to ECC, so that odd tach reading maybe that communication.

lol, Jim hears a lot around here. And our events are usually a really good time, especially when we can get Gump and Eric to make campfire pizza.

It is a long trip, I looked it up, lol.

I almost bought a similar E-150 off a buddy awhile back. He let it go really cheap and I probably should have snagged it and kept it a couple years. Oh well. My current DD is supposed to just be a play toy, my 89 Bronco II Choptop. It’s a little chilly driving in the winter, but 4x4 now works again. Need to get my green Ranger and dump truck fixed so I can get back to the fun projects.

Woo you are in my neck of the woods! Books could be handy.
It is not a swap, truck was M5R1 equipped from the factory.
No codes. 91 so no OBD1 which means no code reader to plug in either.
It had CEL when I bought it which was just a bad 02 sensor. Actually during the 1 month after I replaced the flywheel where all was working I was cruising around with 0 lights on the dash. I miss those days.

And yes that is exactly what I replaced.

Here's the truck's door sticker:
Referencing the info here shows that from factory it had an MROD-R1 (M5R1 I have seen some call it).

I will say although it's not a swap the transmission has been out before. The friend I bought it from and his brother did a DIY rebuild of it a long time ago. They mostly got it right, with the exception of 5th and reverse. It refuses to go into 5th and will grind if you try to force it. Will go into reverse, but it's still clearly not correct as if you for example attempt to put it into 5th it then won't go into reverse until you have a little mini argument with it. I've seen rebuilds of this transmission on YT and think they just put the little rod that extends into the back of the transmission in wrong. The one with the detents. It can be felt.. nothing is holding it in reverse. You know? Like you can feel when you put it into a gear normally there's a detent holding it so you have to give it a tiny bit of force to shift out. No such feeling on the reverse gear. Hopefully that made sense lol.

But they drove it like that for 5 years so although it is a problem I find it unlikely to be related to my current predicament.

Oooo campfire pizza sounds yummy!

I really like this van. I bought it so I would have a relatively warm place to sleep over a winter while I was looking for an actual place to call home. I think I paid $4k ish for it which was counting a good sized battery, 3.5k watt inverter, and a small solar array.
Frame barely has any surface rust, new tires and a rusty exhaust which makes that 302 audible in all the ways that make me giggle.
Has some interesting history that I wish I knew more of. Was some kind of professional custom build by a local business that closed long ago and I can't find any info on. It used to have a wheelchair lift which you can still see the controls for on the back right tailight & the wiring for it still exists as well.
I'm sure it'll be a great vehicle for the next owner.

I don't have many, but here are some obligatory pictures:

Also I really do like Broncos and I could very easily see myself developing a fiscally irresponsible attachment to one (as I did with my ranger) if I ever ended up in possession of one.

They didn't really call it OBD1 even though it is for ford, but it'd be located near the passenger side firewall in the engine compartment and look like

Testers are cheap(about $30) and make it easier, but you can just use a paper clip and count the engine light pulses(search you tube for that). KOEO test will spit out a bunch of codes most of it will be about the engine not running, but if there is a problem between the EDIS(Electronic Distributorless Ignition System) and EEC it might spit a code out saying that, although I doubt it but it's something that is easy to check. The OBD1 was kind of awful, and seldom useful.

The pip/crank position sensor is what ford called a VR(Variable Reluctance) sensor, and it's basically a hall effect sensor looking at a 36 - 1 tooth wheel. If that hall effect sensor is to far away or misaligned from that wheel it could cause a hard start when available voltage drops and then disappear when voltage is high. Also interference can cause that same effect even thought it is shielded. Might want to check that wheel for damage if you can borrow an inspection camera.

The book I have is a Ford 1990 engine/emissions diagnosis shop manual, it's section on the EDIS is only about 25 pages long, but it might take you a while to run all those tests, so you're welcome to borrow it for a while. As far as your transmission and starter issues I don't know that's wild, is it making contact after tightening that top bolt? Maybe point you're camera at it and then try cranking to see if things are flexing.
