Clean Way to Mount a 2-Way Radio?

Driver: "But officer, I was making a rare DX contact to someone on a little island in the middle of the Indian Ocean..."
Let's fix that.
"But officer, I just made a rare DX contact with a group of castaways on a deserted island somewhere in the Pacific. Some guy named Thurston Howell III is offering millions of dollars for their rescue."

Bill? Before cellphones, mobil radio operators did not fail (including peace officers operating a laptop) while driving. Not what form of reality you can dream up Bill. You're attempting to relate to contesters. Real radio operators mostly do what the other's don't. I'll have to "un-plug" now because I may have again have to fight through a barrage of mis-quotes & finger pointing.

Good luck to the OP, sorry for the QRM...

Making a contact isn't always about contesting. Other than the VHF contest, I've rarely participated in contests. Many hams just enjoy making contacts and don't want any part of contesting.

The '97 dash is similar enough down there this should be doable (I did the one under the ash tray on a '95 for a friend once). The brackets I custom-made from thick sheetmetal so that the unit is tighter up against the dash (I think it was 24 gauge I used). (correction: it was 18 gauge)

Looks good.

(Pribably 14gauge. 24 is almost thinner than paper)

Here’s mines. Screwed onto the side of my Explorer console I swapped in

I found a leftover scrap from what I used, it's right at 0.04" thick, so I guess that makes it 18 ga. then.

I really don't know anything about any of this.

However I'm not a smoker.
So personally I've been thinking about removing my ashtray and installing a radio where it goes. I don't know if I will be able to find a radio that will fit perfectly in that space though.

However I have an automatic with a column shifter. So I don't have to worry about shifter stick bumping into the dash, radio or anything like that.

I've not decided if I'm even going to install any kind 2way/CB radio or anything like that or not yet.

That's my 2 cents.

WRPQ991 got my Radioddity DB20G mounted on the side of the console, had to run an external speaker but it works good.

External speaker is the way to go anyway. Upgrade. T

Also mobil rigs: try this, toss a couple of jumper cables, or wires into the water then connect to a ground point, battery (-) onto your vehicle. Now just listen to the signals jump up. Now you're getting out! It's worth at 3db gain.
