Wheel refinishing

I have to wonder how good the German Revel Chrom stuff is compared to HOK.... also ridiculously expensive at $50 an 8 oz rattle can (not to mention unobtainable sold out all the time), and not designed for outdoor use. Instead of $320 for a set of 4 rims it would be $100... maybe $150... half the price not counting the UV protecting clear that would have to go over it, etc etc....
Did you see the guy who used nail polish glitter stuff? - it looked perfect, but again $$$$ for a 4oz container.

I HAVE to do a dead minimum of 2 sprays before I can quit for the winter. My door locks and windshield trim both need hit, and without em, my truck isn't locked :O and I can't get my new windshield installed. As long as I am shooting black and clear might as well get the first layers on the wheels.... just frustrating to be past the window when I am so close.

...they are going to have to be smuggled into the basement to outgas for a few weeks. I may even setup a space heater in the utility area and block off the furnace vents in there to help a little. I'm hoping i can pull it off without any notable odor so I don't get busted. I'll be sleeping in the shop if I stink up the house. I'll start taking pictures as soon as I get the surface prep done. As of now, this is where i'm at, and the photos don't really do it justice. I've gotten all of the scabby areas blended very well. ...

You know the phrase "It’s easier to ask forgiveness than to get permission" I find that only works with people you "associate" with, not with your other half.... getting permission might be awful hard but you will never get forgiveness from a woman.

I just play dumb, it's usually my best defense. I know if I ask, the answer will be an absolute no.
I'm sorry babe, I didn't know that would be a big deal. then a 150 freekin dollar sushi meal, a couple days of quiet, then it passes when she eventually needs me to fix something. same gig as the rest of you guys...
I totally dig the woman, but there are times when I wish she was a tomboy or something so I could get by with that sorta stuff. In her eyes, a freshly caressed and refinished set of pristine and clean car wheels is "filth that belongs outside". I reckon she's right, but I'm still gonna try to get by with it. hehe

no wonder my ex is "my ex" ......
Seal up the room real well... I will say the "paint booth" (shop) where I shot my truck just now smells ok. It was really strong for days.

My wife isn't like ya'lls. Only thing I got in trouble for was test running the bike in the house with no exhaust.

Duplicolor is officially on my shitlist.... 90% of the way through the first coat of "wheel black, gloss" on the wheels and the rattle can started acting like crap (50% of the weight of the can left so I assume 50% full of paint).... 3 squirts later and it was totally out of air. This was a can I bought about 20 days ago, stored in the 70-72 degree house, never used before this and sat down to use all in 1 setting. Shook for the entire duration of some 4 ish minute long song on the radio (I don't take my phone out to the shop). Never inverted it to clear the nozzle for storage, never exposed it to heat, never exposed it to cold.

The one thing that you could point a finger at me... I painted in 59 degree temp even though the can says minimum 60 - I just want it done.

I did not buy it on amazon (since all paint is sold as-is, no refunds, no returns on amazon), I bought it locally (Oreilly I think), but still it pisses me off cause oreally is an hour away, and it wont be 60 degrees again till Thursday for like 2 hours in the afternoon.

I figure I will stab it open run the paint through my hvlp gun just to get the job done tomorrow, forget returns or refunds, just leave a shitty review.

Edit: Found my receipt, it was oreally. bought on 10.10

I keep hijacking your thread with updates on my own misery... hope you don't mind.
I sent duplicolor a "feedback" on their website suggesting they might want to QA that batch since it was so new.
I included all the ink on the bottom of the can and they sent me back an email said they would be sending me a check for the full purchase price... so while I'm still miffed it is 45 degrees and I can't paint, at least I am not out the measly few bucks for 1 can of paint... I didn't really expect money, just a blind gripe about quality and no response. ..... and get this, the response came from "duplicolorsfdc@sherwin.com" ... go to sherwin.com and that is sherwin-williams... and as we know from above a hundred posts ago, sherwin is TCP... so all this time I been using paint basically all from one company. Oh the wonders of corporate buyouts and DBA (doing business as).

How's your project moving?

na, I'm not miffed at all. I like to consider posts a collection of info for other people to read later in the future when they are doing the same thing. I've read hundreds of threads like that here during my new Ranger travels and it's helped a lot. Easier to learn what cracks int he road one might encounter and be ready for them in advance. That's also why I ask a lot of seemingly dumb or redundant questions.

I'm doing final wet-sanding today as I get breaks in between phone calls. I'm having to do it in the shop with spray bottles though, it's so freekin cold outside. It's really kind of pointless since I'm trying to preserve the "lathe spun" look markings on them. I am mainly focusing on thedeer print sections where I did not sandblast so it's got some teeth to bind the primer. I'll clean and wrap them to wait for the weekend, it's supposed to burst back up to 65 degrees and I want to take advantage of that. The only thing remaining is I only have 1.0 tips for my touch-up gun, and I really don't want to run epoxy primer through my good guns either. I'm not sure what to do. I'm tempted to go get a harbor freight throw-away for that, but i also don't want a crap primer layer. The epoxy stuff is a real m****** to sand and I want to keep that minimal. I should have gotten a little bit extra so I could mix it up today and do some test sprays with a crap gun (that I don't even have). I saw a touch-up gun at HF for like 15 bucks, but I'm skeptical about it's ability to lay down a decent coat.
See, this is always my biggest failure. I spend way too much time planning and changing my mind and it takes forever to accomplish anything.

Well, I have today and tomorrow to wrap up this spray. 63 degrees today, 65 tomorrow.
I got the wet sanding done and all the prep. Chinese rigged some little stands for the wheels for spraying and curing. got the epoxy primer sprayed today.
I have them inside now with the shop heater set to 85. i'll leave it like that til I'm ready to spray tomorrow evening.

Just to make it official, I am skunked till spring. the wheels are still sitting on buckets down the middle of the shop 90% black, but I am gonna stack em up and store em till spring. Lots of little other issues combined with weather, I know I just wont get 2 or 3 consecutive days of decent weather till at least the first week of March.

Them there look plenty good to me, I would be plenty happy if mine turned out that good.

I'm relatively happy with the result. I got a couple of runs in the tight spots. I had to use my normal size gun for the 1.7 tip, plus my pressure regulator broke so I was wingin' it a little. The runs are real minor and i can hit it with some 240/320 before the next coat. These are beater wheels, so i'm not going to fret too much over them. As long as what I spray on there stays on there i'm good.
Fortunately, I'll be able to use my touch-up gun for the color because I have proper size tips for it. After 3 hours, the epoxy primer is already hard and dry, so I should be good for next coat by noon tomorrow. i'll keep the shop @ 85 degrees overnight to be sure. My IR thermometer shows the wheels staying around 82 so I'm in good shape.
The only thing that bugs me are a few spots that were corroded real bad. I should do a few coats of sealer/primer and sand to fill them in, but I just don't care enough to get that detailed with this job. No one will ever notice it but me. These old wheels were beat to hell so this will be a big improvement regardless.

Well, got them wrapped up tonight. They are nothing impressive, but they look decent. I am not happy with the color. It is heavy with the flake, but the base color is WAY darker than the sample I picked out.
It's hard to get good pictures of them inside, but the clear coat turned out pretty dang good. Very minor orange peel, but better than some Ford factory paint I've seen. I don't think i'm even going to bother buffing them down. I'll see what the shine looks like after they gas for a few days.
Overall, goodnuff
Now i'm wondering.... how long do you think they should cure before I get rubber mounted on them? I don't want the tire bead to bond with the paint and rip it off next time. Any ideas?
