Y'all are right on it. I DID have to press the old ones out. And they WERE replacements that I installed years ago.

So, I just removed the passenger side, which are original to the truck. I pressed them out and the new Dana OEM style are tight. I've begun pressing the lower one in.

That still leaves me with "how to proceed on the driver side. I guess I could get a different set for that side. But I'm leaning towards welding them. Only problem is that Imafraid of what the heat will do.

Decisions, decisions.

... and I'm glad I'm doing this, because the spindle bearings were about to fail. Seals were bad, grease is dried out. No signs of rust.

I don't understand. Y'all have seen how I baby this truck. Only ever drive it a few miles to church on sunny, dry Sunday mornings at low speeds on clean, paved roads....

:icon_rofl:

To do it right you need aftermarket ones that are the same size as the ones you pulled out.

Despite its easy life... you could throw the spicers behind the seat for spares.

Spindle bearings are so easy to neglect on these things, the seals are pretty cheesy to protect the poor things too.

And that's exactly what I'll do. As luck would have it, I found the replacements I bought years ago for the passenger side. So, I don't have to order any ball joints today.

Today, I fabbed up a bracket for my new tablet. Primary purpose is navigation apps. Anyway, trying to make something that is solid and doesn't shake a lot. I think this us going to work. Yes. I have more than enough room to shift gears.

Interesting thing, yesterday. A young guy stopped by while I was out working on the Ranger. He saw Livvy and the hound logo on the truck and thought maybe I hunt with dogs. So, I explained about overlanding and how I enjoy offroading and camping. Then he asked if I would sell the truck. I told him "no". He said "Even for $4,000 or $5,000."? Then I had to explain my labor of love, pointing out all the things I have personally built and modified and how I love that little truck. How there's a strong sentimental value on it now and how I have put upwards of $15k into it. And it's not for sale at a price that any other human being would find reasonable.

Funny. I get that all the time. I throw out anumber like $25,000. Why not? I spent half of that amount on paint, bought new wheels, installed limited slip, dual exhausts, leather seats, etc. That price is just my cost. People think the number is crazy.

"But it's an old truck," people say.

"Yes, but everything is new."

I've gotten that a few times recently. People hear Ranger and then ask if I want to sell. Counter girl asked at the parts store the other day and I thought if you'd asked a year ago you'd be holding the keys, but I didn't just engine swap to get rid of it.

I've been like lefty when asked about my rust bucket F-100. Normally I just say no, but some times I'll say that I'd think about it for some stupid high amount of money. Usually getting similar reaction. I was like "you want it and I really, really don't want to sell it". Actually I wouldn't sell even if they handed me the money. I aught to tell them that they misunderstood., you'll have to pay me that much to think about it, but actually buying it is going to cost a lot more.

I'm not going to say that I have the best financial sense when it comes to vehicles. I could have made $15k profit on my F-250 at any time in the last few years, even now I could probably clear 10k profit. Still not happening. I can only do that because it was given to me and I've had to put very little into it. I'm not really attached to it though, so maybe somewhere down the road.

Ours is more of a labor of love, not money. But if you are buying used and not new, you are certainly saving money. And even if you throw a few thousand into your old truck, you're still coming out ahead.

Here's a sneak preview of my latest bit of insanity, a '98 Chevy dually. I've been asked to do a rattle can 2k paint job on it.

This might be a good time to build up and install my spare axle shafts and keep this set as spares.

Spindle bearing journal.

Shouldn't this assembly be kinda floppy?

Well, that's depressing. I thought I had a complete spare set if Dana 35 axle shafts that I bought from someone here a few years ago. Apparently, all I bought were the inner shaft pieces. I'm missing the driver side outer, passenger side outer and passenger side piece with the female slip joint and outer yoke. Bummer. I do have a set of new u-joints. So, temporarily, I'll put a new joint in this and install it. The spindle bearing doesn't carry a lot of weight or force, so, with new bearing and grease, it should be OK for my next few trips. The passenger side soindle bearing journal isn't as bad. I need to start watching the junk yard for parts again.

I need to scrounge up more outer shafts too, they are getting hard to find.

I could have sworn there was grease in this thing when I installed it years ago.
