I got the yellow tube when I was at Home Depot the other day. Are you talking about that one, or the bottle with the brush?

They’re referring more to the brand than the packaging. That little tube will probably last you forever. I think Home Depot sells Rectorseal brand and that is probably what you got.

One is usually a whiter color for general use. The yellow colored one is usually rated for use with gas piping. But it works for general use also.

You sound like you're describing plumbers tape.

The yellow tube says it's multi-purpose and can be used on metal and PVC and formulated for potable water and natural gas.

Either, just packaging size. I get the little can with the brush, use the brush to work it in, but the goop is the same. Goes by number “5”

It serves the same purpose as the tape, gum up the threads to stop leaks, I personally use tape and then the pipe dope on top and it seals the first time 99 out of 100.

The line is buried and the valve boxes are in.

This spigot doesn't appear to be leaking. I used the Rectoseal 5 on it.

This was the first spigot I installed. I removed it, removed the Teflon tape and used the Rectoseal 5. It still has a small trickle of water running down the face of the post.

This is going to be my next attempt to stop the leak.

With my luck... that free standing spigot would be broken off within 6 months.

Someday I might actually fix that concrete slab and landscape around that spigot.

Don’t make the mistake I made when I was a kid on the first house I bought. I wanted 3 foot tall bushes, but I couldn’t afford them, so I waited till I could afford them. Well, that was like three or four years later, and if I had stuck the 6 inchers in the ground, they would’ve been twice that height by then!

I’ll bet there is a “scratch and dent“ nursery somewhere near you. Go buy some inexpensive stuff and a tiny bit of fertilizer, dig a hole and stick it in the ground. You could probably find water close by. Not everything will live, but most of it will. Get a bunch of tulip bulbs, and some pansy type stuff, but the summer variety. Won’t cost much, stick in a mix, you can always trim it up later, and it will grow faster than you could’ve ever imagined.

Did I mention you might be able to find water close by? You could probably also find somebody to dig too.

Looks like an awesome job Jim. Glad the trenching wasn't too difficult, and you saved a metric buttload of money doing it yourself.
