fix my garbage can and put a new mailbox post in... the owner of a what I'm assuming now is a totaled Nissan decided this for me... I know Nissan because of the driving light block off plate I found beside the road... (the headlight shards and mud flap weren't marked that I could tell...) Conveniently they junked their stuff after the garbage was picked up this morning but it sure was an inconvenience... They sheared the 4x4 post my mailbox was mounted on at ground level, there were 3 tire marks within 2' width in my ditch by the mailbox, tore the axle out of the garbage can (drilled a few holes and 12 zip ties later it'll hold for a while... I'm pretty sure I would have to pay for a replacement through Recology?).

On the mailbox it was mostly just dinged up (somewhat beefy locking unit), some rough body work and it doesn't look too bad, used a digging bar to loosen up the gravel around the old post enough to wrap a chain around the stub and lifted it out with the tractor bucket (conveniently no concrete...), grabbed a 6' treated 4x4 I had sitting around that I got free from something, grabbed a couple 3' long 2x4's and some deck screws and made things happen... Still not what I wanted to spend 3 hours doing on Monday night after work but at least it's done...

Oh, and when I did the shop the county made me pay the fire department like $80 for an address sign, they folded that over and bent up the aluminum angle it was mounted on, of course it tore when I tried straightening it out, I'm not set up for welding aluminum yet so I had to deal with that frustrating aluminum soldering stuff... it'll hold until I pick up some more angle or something else...

Something like that, wasn't a great day, but at least it got done, could have been much worse, it was all "free" fixes at least...

It wouldn't have been so frustrating if I could have at least watched, that would have been entertaining...

i hate when people hit the mail box. the guys to the left of my neighbor across the street kept knocking mine over and the cops do nothing, nor did asking them to replace it and stop hitting it.

i got an 8' piece of 12" schedule 80 water pipe and put down, than filled it with rebar and concrete. they hit it one more time and then it didn't get hit by them anymore. i found a bunch of glass in the grass and when i looked at their minivan, the back window was gone and then back hatch of hte van was crushed inwards. they came and wanted me to replace the back hatch and window and i said " are you serious? all the times you knocked my mailbox down and broke it and you want me to fix your van? you are crazy." they never spoke to me again but they never hit hte mailbox again, either.

that mailbox stand lasted a long time. i would get up in the morning and find bumpers and car parts in the yard for a few years. i guess someone got mad though because one morning i went out and there was a bunch of tire tracks in the yard and a big ol brush guard. it looked like one of the drunks hit it, decided it tore their truck up so they backed up to it and put it in 4x4 and pushed it over.

i figured that was enough time on the hd pail box post and went back to a normal one, which no one has hit since.

i have one of hte cities fishing piers at the end of my street so lots of people go down fishing and drinking and then cannot make it back to the main street because they go into one of hte drainage ditches or hit a tree

So growing up, I lived in a cul-de-sac. We lived on the exit side of it, so about every 3-4 months some drunk kids looking for parties would whip into the cul-de-sac and end up taking out our mailbox. Dad was so fed up after fixing it 3 or 4 times, he dug a 4' deep hole 1'x1', installed a 8' schedule 40 pipe and a 6' 4x4 sleeve and filled it all with concrete. About 3 months later another drunk kids came in an tried to take out the mailbox about 10 pm one night. Big metal crunching noise, a couple a seconds later a lot of "WTFs" were heard. The next morning expecting to see mailbox leaning over or the ground all tore up. Nope. Mailbox was tilting about 5* and glass and a mangled bumper on the ground. I look at dad and saw the grin of the Grinch when he decided to steal Christmas. That's a win dad.

So far our mailboxes have been left alone. As long as it stays that way, they won’t be upgraded. I remember hearing years ago of a guy living in a housing plan that requires all mailboxes to be the same and some guys were going around playing mailbox baseball out of a car window. Well, after losing a couple mailboxes, he welded up some 1/4” plate to fit snug inside the plastic mailbox. Came out one morning to find the remains of a shattered wooden baseball bat and a crack in the plastic box…

Some areas have restrictions on reinforced mailboxes/posts/brick pillars citing that people can be seriously injured wrecking into them and cars substantially damaged. I say if they would stay on the road like they are supposed to it wouldn’t be a problem…

I had the end of my one driveway plowed up by a tanker for gas/oil well a few years back. Township required me to install a 12” diameter pipe in the drainage ditch and be below road height. I had a friend with a small backhoe dig it out, put down a layer of modified limestone to level things out, then backfilled with modified limestone and broken concrete around the pipe. This loaded tanker that wasn’t supposed to be on our section of road and had to have been flying. Totally missed the bend in the road, plowed down through like 50-70’ of gooey bottomed drainage ditch and 10’ or so into my driveway. That was right after my hip surgery so I hired someone to fix it. They replaced the damaged pipe, repaired the drainage ditch, set a small concrete head wall at the new end of the pipe, then filled in around the head wall and behind it with over a cubic yard of concrete. The rest was modified limestone again. So far at least 3 people have gone into the ditch and hit the sloped head wall, which I’m guessing gave them a heck of a jolt. Surprised that nobody has left broken parts behind from that.

i had found out after my mailbox was installed and later uninstalled that yes, you are not supposed to use reinforced mail box posts. oh well, you are not supposed to put traps in the backyard but people kept hoping my fence to short cut going to the end of the road.... some boards with nails stuck through put under leaves has stopped that practice too

My mail box is hard to keep closed because some kid decided to use MY mailbox for batting practice. A small semi-circle dent about the size of a Louisville Slugger. Whomever it was, they were weak AF. didnt even knock it off it's post. Just a little dent. I also checked the neighbor's mailbox's for dents, notta. JUST ME. LMFAO.

I ever need to replace mine I will bury a chunk of railroad iron upright, slide a black pvc pipe over it & fill it with concrete. Right now its a 6” wood post leaning back towards the ditch. Havent had any issues yet but if I do Ive got no problem “upgrading “ it.
