I was at an auction and a '98 Eddie Bauer Explorer with 5.0L came up, bidding ended at $400 and now I own yet another explorer... It has 212k miles and my guess is a replaced/repaired transmission as the shift indicator doesn't line up and the fluid is clean.

I didn't realize there was that much difference between a Limited like my '00 and the Eddie bauer and the subtle differences in 2 years in small things... The EB has a CD changer and different front seats (both leather), the '98 has louvers in the sun roof cover for when it's in vent mode where the '00 doesn't, the EB has a knob for comfort or offroad (I'm guessing air ride setting for the rear air shocks that both have) that the Limited doesn't have. The EB has auto headlights where the limited doesn't (if that's driven off the mirror that would explain that as the '00 is missing the mirror) and finally the EB has auto locks which is somewhat annoying but livable, the Limited doesn't have that. I didn't look to see if the EB had the "note to self" thing in the visor or the secondary visors like the Limited has, and it doesn't have the mirror settings however those work...

I did notice the '98 has the fabricated exhaust manifolds where the '00 has the cast manifolds, I had heard they changed around then but don't remember when

The Manifolds are the "cheat code" to Identify the heads

Tube shorty "headers" are the earlier GT40 heads

CAST IRON Manifolds are the later GT40P heads

I've waited almost two years to talk to you.

2.9 > 4.0

Fight me.

Well, since this my wife claimed the '98, we sold the Rav4 she had before that since it was worth more. It got totaled from a smashed in drivers door and broken mirror, fixed that for $25 and use of a 2x4... and now a year ago I acquired a '97 Mountaineer for a parts rig for $200...

I like the 5.0L Explorer setup, nice reliable drivetrain that isn't worked too hard... my '00 was beat to death, I don't know how much abuse it takes to WEAR OUT the spider gears on a L/S 8.8 that's all wheel drive as well as bend the trailer hitch down, but all that happened in it's past...
