My credo
Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
I need to get my caprice wagon from where it is now to my new place, so I can start getting it slapped together.

I know that uhaul flat refused to rent people car trailers to tow behind the old rangers, with the apparent exception of if the towed car was a geo metro (not sure how true that is).

I have the tow package, the car weighs a touch over 4k pounds, I can't imagine their car trailers weigh over 3.5k..

Anyone know if they'll rent me one? I'll call Tuesday when their open.. but im impatient.. and I'll take an earlier answer if I can get one lol.

Maybe try Uhaul dot com and see if you can choose a vehicle you'll be towing the desired trailer with.

If you go to uhaul.com and enter what your towing with and what you want to tow, they'll let you know.

I towed my 1996 Ranger from PA to TX with a 2019 Ranger after the uhaul guy looked at the hitch and confirmed its rating.

There's no brakes on a dolly, and I feel like that station wagon weighs a lot more than my Ranger.

Went to the website, punched in what I'll be towing with, and car trailer wasn't on the list of what would be available.

Looks like I'll just have to call them. Bah. Hate having to call people.

Why should I pay someone else to screw it up when I can screw it up myself for free?
That Caprice wagon might require permission from the Harbor Master also, that's a big vehicle. U Haul is very picky about how they rate your vehicle/hitch/towed load. I have feeling you'll find out the Ranger will not qualify as a tow vehicle for that behemoth based on tongue weight. I have a 1-ton E-350 with tow package and they once denied me towing a long bed tandem axle carrier with 2- Porsche 944's since their trailers had surge brakes only? I never could figure that one out? I changed the rental information to 1-car and they OK'ed it...needless to say I lied and put both cars on there with no issues.

I used the same trick whenever I needed a car hauler. It was always a 2 door Escort from 89 that was the lightest Ford I could think of since I was always towing a Ford.

U-haul has a rule about the ratio of the weight of the towed trailer/vehicle compared to the weight of the towing vehicle, and I don't recall exactly what that ratio was but its pretty close to 1:1 which is very conservative but its their stuff and most people you see renting U-haul stuff are idiots so I understand where they are coming from.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Hm. I'm bad at technology I guess lol.

That's probably what I'm gonna tell them I'm towing lol.

No.

I'll tell them its a festiva. Those are neat.
If you tell them it's a Festiva, they'll give you some counterweight to throw inside so it doesn't blow off the trailer.

I thought their tow dollies had surge brakes?

It’s within the tow limitations of the truck. Whether U-Haul will allow it or not depends on how conservative their lawyers tell them to be.

My credo
Never put off ‘til tomorrow what you can put off indefinitely
Everybody is right I think, but a few thoughts.

I have rented the U-Haul car haulers, and I’ve also been denied one time. Someone said it, but their standards are designed to be idiot proof, not practical for someone who knows how to tow.

So, risking the wrath of the “TRS report a dangerous post” gods, first and foremost, make sure you know what you’re doing, and never try something that you simply think you can get away with. Always be safe.

Having said that, similar to what a few of the guys said, after that everything I towed was a Volkswagen beetle, one of the old ones. But every time I rented, I also stated that I was going to tow several cars. They always took the small one, put that on the form, and gave me the trailer. The two thoughts are, if you lying about the car on the trailer, and then you have a wreck, all hell breaks loose, especially if somebody gets hurt or gets killed. If you tell them you’re gonna put different cars on the trailer, but the clerk is “helpful“ and only lists the little one, you’ll be covered if something happens (I think). My experience, and we used to run a fleet, is the insurance always pays, but you can get canceled or blackballed immediately after.

I’ll give you another thought, something I’ve actually done several times. If I wasn’t comfortable with any trailer I could rent, or if it was ridiculously expensive for a one-way tow for several days, instead of renting, I bought the cheapest trailer I could find that was safe for what I was towing. I made sure I had a spare, and I used it for everything I needed. On the backside, I put a coat of black rust oleum on it and a couple of red and white stickers and made sure the lights looked pretty, and I usually sold it for what I paid for it or maybe even a little more. So with a little effort and a little outlay of cash, I got it done basically for free or for much less than the cost of a long rental.

hope it helps, my two cents
