Who here downshifts?

You've described double clutching for an upshift, which isn't necessary with a synchronized tranny since the input shaft naturally slows itself down for an upshift and doesn't wear the sycnrhos much, for an downshift the syncrhos must speed up the input shaft which causes a lot more wear.

To double clutch downshift, with the clutch not pressed and the tranny in nuetral you blip the throttle, this uses the engine to speed up the input shaft, then push in the clutch and select a lower gear,

The BLIP is where most people blow it. They need to find someone to ride with that can show them, then the light bulb on their head will glow with win..

this is very very important...or no point in double clutching.

and you wont even need to use the clutch if speed is matched but it is always best to use the clutch.

when speed is matched and you shift correctly, you can use the technique effectively on low traction conditions to then engine brake. so its not for no emergency manueverinz.

when driving casual and wanting to step on it and go, i down shift and then continue to shift up. when just slowing down say im in 4th and im coming to a stop, i just take it out of gear until im stopped and go straight to 1st instead of going 4th, 3rd, 2nd, then 1st.

I'd rather replace brakes than a transmission or clutch.

I downshift when carrying a heavy load.......to help braking.......

I only do it in big trucks and semi's. Only do that due to weight of what I'm pulling, never have in small cars or small trucks.

I think that is aimed more for jake braking, which can be kind of loud for those that don't appreciate the sound.

I have been known to slip my automatics down a hole or two if I am coming down a hill under questionable road conditions, it seems to help.

the signs around here read "Excessive engine braking noise prohibited" one is posted at the top of a hill about 50' before a "trucks use low gear" sign. the key when i read them is the word excessive. if it's necessary, do it. if it's not, don't.

I've always down shift in every five speed i've owned car and truck. I never once had tranny or clutch issues. I always like to time my down shifts perfect when I have a car riding my ass so I can come to a complete stop without touching my brake petal that seems to piss'em off.
