saw on another site that "payload packages" were offered as options on rangers (i have a '97 4L 4wd ex cab) that increased the GVWR from 4920# to 5100#.
1) how do i tell if i have this package?
2) what's the difference in packages? i'm trying to maximize my GVWR...

payload package is like a heavy duty rear suspension that is capable of handling more weight. my truck has it and rides really rough unless i got a few hundred pounds in the bed. im not sure how you can tell if you have it or not.

Just go to Ford's website and follow the "contact us" (or something similar) link.

build sheet phone number

You can get your build sheet for free by calling Ford at 1-800-392-3673. just be sure and have the VIN number handy and when you call push the button for other inquiries. i just got off the phone with them and got one for the ranger and the bronco.

EDIT: you can get your window sticker here. they go back 5 years i think

Is there really that much of a difference in payload packages. Its not like a camper special for a truck. Maybe a change in shocks or a added leaf overload.

Look on the door or door jamb for the certificate sticker, lists what the GVWR is. Normally only 300-400 lbs difference. That sticker also identifies what springs you have front and rear.

That's one advantage to a GM--it's all on a big sticker in the glove box. Everything.

Really? :icon_confused: Never noticed it on the new models. Must be on the older models.

I know on the Fords' F-250 & up, theres a sticker that forewarns if the vehicle has or doesn't have the ambulance package. Another way to check is to see if it has massive amounts of leaf springs. Like 8 or more.

I've got the payload "package" too- an extra rear leaf spring. $70 option back in 2002. My GVWR is 5070. Doesn't seem to make it ride any worse, it is like an overload spring... most 4X4's probably have it, I have a total of 4 rear leafs per side- mine's 2WD tho.

There is never an advantage to having a GM. Think about what you just said, the cons always outweigh the pros with Government Motors vehicles don't they?!:icon_confused::icon_rofl:
