How can I identify the torson diff lock on a 2009 ranger fx4 with a r8 axle

The Torsen rear axle in Rangers is the large bearing, so the flanges on the ends of the tubes are larger than on all the other Ranger axles (which are small bearing), so there is no need to pull stuff apart. The only way a Ranger got a factory large bearing axle is with the Torsen diff.
Just a tech note, 2010-2011 diff will accept older carriers. Stuffed a 1994 LSD carrier in my 2011 because I'm too poor for a torsen. Fit just fine when I swapped ring gear and took the tone ring off.until 2010 and 2011 came along. they have big bearing, big disc brakes, 28 spline open diff rear axles. but no provision for the tone ring & it's sensor.

Yep. 2010-11 is same spline, just different bearings, tubes, and brakes. From a 28 spline axle?
The axle is just different enough that you have to be careful what you get for it. The differential itself is pretty much same same with any other 28 spline axle aside from the bearings.Good to know, I've never actually taken a good look at a 10 or 11 Ranger...
