Torsen Rear End... in non-Fx4 Ranger?

howdy y'all -

Did the 31-spline 8.8 with the Torsen LSD ever end up in a non-Fx4 truck?

I've got an 02 Ranger..
When I got the truck about two years ago, she had the yellow and blue factory bilstein shocks, but no Fx4 badges or stickers, and a 4L10 on the diff tag, which led me to believe it had the "XLT Off-Road" package.

I changed my rear diff oil recently, and ran into a few surprises. My axle tubes are definitely the 3.25" variety, with the neck-down towards the drums. So this means I've a 31-spline axle. When I cracked the diff cover, I found not a standard ford LSD carrier with the s-shaped spring, like I was expecting, but a Torsen! :headbang:

Not that I'm complaining, I mostly just want to know...

It was my understanding that this axle never went with this truck?

Was the Torsen 8.8 an option that could be added? Why would somebody do that? Could it be a mistake from the factory?
I suppose somebody could have swapped in a newer axle from an Fx4 truck, but I don't have any history from any previous owners.

Anybody any ideas? :icon_confused:

Maybe they just removed the decals from the truck?

yeah, that's certainly a possibility. however the decals on the bed read the standard "4x4 - offroad," and i don't see any outlines from an old fx4 sticker.

other than the rear axle, stickers, and factory bilstein shocks, was there anything else that differentiated an fx4 truck from others?

It's also possible the axle was swapped. Alternatively, you can buy those Torsen units and install them. No need to assume this unit is factory.

Well, I guess I either have an fx4 truck that somehow ended up without the right badges or stickers, since my truck has (or had...) all of those things listed above, orr it's been swapped. Either way, good deal!

I'm thinking the FX4 had some exclusive interior accents too, no? (carbon-fiber dash and/or floor bezel maybe?)?

Shame someone took off the decals, the FX4s are sortof a collectors truck now.

He has an 02, they didn't have a silver bezel, or red or blue seat sections, or leather, no silver trim rings

HEYO, I guess that's what I have then. My interior is just that, minus the double sticks. When i bought the truck I thought the all-black interior was cool. I guess I have an fx4 truck then! I just wonder now where the bed stickers went......
I got rid of those seats and the awful plastic center console, replaced with a 60/40 bench out an '04+... I just think a pickup deserves a bench seat.

It's also possible something happened to the bed and it was replaced.

Sure, I guess I could run the VIN. I'm pretty confidant that it's an fx4 truck at this point, like I said it was mostly out of curiosity that I asked.
I don't think that would tell me anything I don't already know, would it?
also, where would I do that? dealer?
