3.0l Vulcan ran 9.3:1 compression ratio so any small issues of carbon build up(in cylinders) or EGR clog up will cause pinging on 87 octaneI know that no Ranger's came with a blower. And funny thing, but my 98 3.0 Ranger requires the use of premium. I usually run 91 in it. It pings on anything less. Always has, ever since I've owned it. There's nothing I can replace that hasn't been replaced. Likely due to the fact I have a chip that bumps up the timing, a MAC intake, and run no muffler in the exhaust. Runs great, is a tad loud. Needs 91 octane.
You could try 1 heat range cooler spark plugs next time you change them
And make sure DPFE and EGR are working well, if you disabled EGR then you would be stuck running higher octane
