I am in a situation here. recently I have had the o/d light flashing and screwing up my shifting from 1st to 2nd. I get rid of it by putting the transmission in neutral on the highway, turning the ignition off, then on, and changing it to drive. Fixes problem for a day or two. Code P0761.

So I do some research, and I decide I want to try to fix this problem. I buy a shift solenoid and a filter w/ new gasket. I drove the truck on two lifts, dropped the transmission pan, replace the filter, and swap out the solenoid for what I thought was the SSC. cleaned the pan, slapped on new gasket, tighten bolts, put truck in neutral (with engine off), rolled truck off lifts, and filled w/ 3.9 Qrt of Mercon V equivalent oil (Valvoline high mileage).

I start up my Ranger, place selector in Drive, and it feels like I'm in Neutral. Give it a little more gas, because we've all seen this before, and slowly gives in 1st. pull out of my driveway on to the road, and it goes, RPM's get up to 4000, and I realize it's not shifting. I drive around on 2000-4000 RPM's to see if the fluid needed to cycle or whatever, nothin. I usually back in to my driveway, so I try, Place gear selector in Reverse, wait a sec, give a little gas, and I'm driving forward! I move the selector in Neutral and try some gas, sure enough, it goes forward! ahhhhh. I pull in my drive way to get it off the road, place selector in Park, give it some gas to see if it would TAC out. NO, It locks in park, but rps won't go above 2000, like its in drive with your foot on the brake.

As if the story wasn't long enough, made short, next day I drop pan, swap out new solenoid for the old one, new fluid (3.9 Quarts) Same problem.

Has anyone seen or heard of this, or do you know why it wont go in neutral or reverse?

Did you ever find a solution?
I have a very similar problem
When the ambient air temperature is 75+ degrees Ranger will shift differently. Shortly after the O/D will begin flashing then it gets stuck in gear and/or wont shift accelerating or braking then accelerating. I have to park wait a bit. Then I may be able to drive a short distance before it happens again. During the winter months no problems

The op last signed in on the day they posted this. It was their only post. It's highly unlikely they'll be back after 14 years.
