Could be FPR diaphram.

I’d buy it. Good Luck!
I was thinking cat...but i have no real idea. He said i can test drive it. So it probably runs pretty good till it gets warm.

He claims a ford dealer looked at it couldnt figure it out though....but seeing as how its probably twice as old as half the techs there i take that with some salt

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Today people just drive them. If it starts, then off they go. I really do not try and troubleshoot a used car until I have done a complete tune up on it. That is counting sensors along with all the other routine maintenance. Plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires, fuel filter, O2 sensor, TPS, MAF, some sensors can be cleaned like your water temp sensor or Idle Air Control Valve if equipped.

One truck I bought a while back was really bad. I pulled the spark plugs and how it even ran I have no clue. The plugs were just burnt up. I don't believe in the parts cannon, but there are quite a few consumable parts I do replace without question. I have yet to ever pull out a new O2 sensor in a used truck. Just how I would go about it.

I bought my ranger non running and the guy was gonna scrap it if i didnt buy it.

That may have influenced my choice a bit.

But once i got it running its given me 5 years or so of pretty trouble free service.

The trick is to buy ones that havent been hacked up. This 86 seems very unmolested if what the guys saying is true...hell its even got the factory radio still.

Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
302's are carbureted, 5.0l's use EFI

I'm not in Mi but a junkyard 302 or 5.0l goes for $400, not too bad after your $1,000 start...worse case scenario.

Besides the engine issue, how's the frame? Is it solid?

He says it is. Im gonna look it over real good obviously. But unless hes real good at hiding stuff i cant see the body being that good and the frame/floorboards/whatever being bad. My ranger is in much worse shape bodywise and the frame is great lol.

I didnt ask for pics underneath...i pry should have. But if its junk im just out gas money and drive time. So its a worthwhile gamble.

I guess the bed is rhinolined. He said it was an old mans truck (he might of said his grandpa, the kid comes off a bit odd) either way its for sure worth a look.

Hes got 2 other trucks for sale too he asked if i was interested in....an 81 Dodge 150 with a slant 6 and a 96 Ranger. I seen pics of the dodge its almost as nice as the ford. He DD's a real clean 92 Ram. I think hes a guy after my own likeness on these old trucks and just has a few to many.

If the underside of the truck looks good, I would consider buying it. For $800 - $1000, you really can't gonwrong as long as it has a good frame and decent sheetmetal. It is a good thought to check the wiring as well and make sure it isn't hacked.

Crossed threads are tight threads.
Pretty sure '86 was the first year Ford had EFI on the Truck motors (302/351 etc)...I'd buy it.

The 302 got it midyear 85 IIRC but the 351 was carbed untill 88.

I do wish it had a 351 in it lol. I always kinda meh'ed about the 302's in trucks. Enough other stuff i like about it though to kinda override that
