ford ranger with 1979 302 timing issue?

so i tried timing my motor with my friend but hes a chevy guy and never done a ford and i have no clue....when i drop the distributor in do i point the rotor at the number 1 cylinder at tdc like u do on a chevy motor? i have the firing order just dont know exactly how to time it

i know the number 1 goes at number one but when i put the dist in do i point it at 1 because all the pictures online look diff and all the videos are only for chevys

the number 1 post on the cap is pointing towards the drivers side of the motor though

Mine was to the passenger side... make sure you have it at TDC1.

First tap the starter to verify the engine turns clockwise or counter clockwise- I think clockwise but test to be sure. Take #1 plug out (left side 1st plug, opposite of chebby). Then either bump the starter around or turn by hand with a finger in the sparkplug hole feeling for compression. When you feel pressure, then bring it around to TDC and it will be the true TDC not 180 degrees off. THEN drop the dist in with the rotor pointing at the #1 sparkplug wire on the cap after fully seated. You can then set the timing- move the harmonic balancer to the timing mark (instead of TDC, 8 BTDC or whatever the timing is) and rotate the dist housing until the high lobe is lined up perfectly with the #1 position and tighten down. If the timing chain isn't worn out it will be timed perfectly. This works for every car as long as you know the direction of rotation and where the #1 plug is...

when i point the rotor to the number 1 on the cap the rotor is pointed at the number 8 cylinder...i dont have my fuel pump yet so i was just pouring a little bit of gas in it to see if it starts and it just shoots a little bit of smoke when it turns over

when i pointed the rotor at the number 1 cylinder and made that post my number 1 it acted like it wanted to fire but still wouldnt

No. Take #1 plug out, rotate the engine with a finger in the sparkplug hole- and when u feel compression in the hole, bring it up to TDC and see if the rotor is pointing at #1 on the cap. If that is correct verify the firing order.

It very well could.

As long as you can get the rotor to point to number one at TDC on the cap you should be good to go once you get the firing order straightened out.

ok so i put it at tdc pointed the rotor at the number 1 cylinder it wants to start but only when i move my vacuum advanced all the way to the left...im thinking im off a tooth on timing it?
