My ranger (97 2.3) has always occasionally thrown an evap code I just lived with but after some hvac problems and lean codes from a vacuum leak I'm just overhauling the whole evap and egr system and replacing all the vacuum lines forward of the firewall.

So the canister has 4 ports: 2 are about 1/4in with one hose going to the fuel tank and the other going to the purge solenoid. That leaves two ~1\2" ports on top sticking up with nothing connected. Did some digging on YouTube and the only thing I found was a video that wasnt too clear where there were just two rubber caps on the ports.

Is that right? If not what goes there?

My credo
Give 'yer balls a tug. Fight me.
Reroute tank vent line into cabin for on demand gasoline scented air freshener.

....seriously do not do this.

Edit: also does anyone know if the purge valve is directional? I figured not but it's not completely symmetrical and easier to blow (slightly) one direction

My purge valves were directional on my 1985 v-8 351W.

I had never seen a four port canister, that I could remember, and I owned a 1997 Ranger 4.0L, so, for anyone curious:

Now, on my V-8 (from Colorado) , it had two canisters. If memory serves me correctly, the bigger ports went to a row of 4 valves, which in turn were connected to ... two thermactor pumps!

I would suspect the bigger ports were to feed a larger volume of fumes to a single air pump, in an area that required stricter emissions .
