Code P104/ Exhaust modifications, how to fix? Need to tow with ” old red”

Burned up Black ERG regulator sensor thing by oil dipstick.
Runs smooth, good power, do I need this and is ERG valve probably stuck in one position. May need new converter? Need to tow 4000 lb camper right now.
Ran 600 miles since this happened, AC no work w/ valve wire unplugged.
replace all to stock or modify for towing? Have to run as is the check engine
comes on after fueling, but clear w/ Blue Driver scanner, RUNS GOOD AS IS

DPFE sensor burned up maybe? How do you do that without a blowtorch?

Can you run truck with out it functioning?

Who modified there exhaust? No Cat, duals, etc.

I have to tow a 4000 lb camper, and want to do it as is w/o fixing anything.

It happened going up Mount Eagle on I-24, burned something out and now it runs fine, but throws code.

I will take picture of melted thing to ad to here.

Well, obviously, as you know, it will run without that. The DPFE sensor controls the EGR valve and all that has to do with emissions. Someone else will give more detail about how well or poorly the engine will run this way. But its going to “throw a code” until you replace the sensor Which is pretty easy and not extremely expensive.

Concerning exhaust modifications, many people have replaced their exhaust. However, we will not discuss eliminating catalytic converters here because it is illegal at the federal level.

If it's a 3.0 it'll probably ping like crazy towing a heavy load with no EGR system. There's also a a vacuum line attached to it so if it's broken or removed you will have a vacuum leak. I cant decipher the rest of your problems...

The computer recognizes the EGR system is not working (obviously since it threw a code) and will turn the timing back a little bit to try and prevent pinging from happening. That along with the knock sensor (if this model has one) will help prevent it from pinging. If it does ping, you will have to try a higher octane fuel, I would not let it rattle continuously for very long.

Guess what that sensor does? It measures the pressure in the exhaust gas pipe that leads to the EGR. When there is a higher pressure in the pipe, that means the EGR is closed. When the pressure drops, that means the EGR valve is open.

Where does this pressure in this pipe come from? Back pressure in the exhaust system.

What happens when you open the exhaust up for more power and less exhaust back pressure? There is less pressure in this pipe. The sensor thinks the EGR is open all the time, and it sends a code and you end up in the same situation you are in now. That is why only cat-back exhaust is legal. The complete front part of the exhaust and all the cat's are considered emissions devices and the engine and the sensors are calibrated for it.

Everyone thanks for reply’s, I got the camper and got 200 miles by using higher octane gas , and no overdrive. I’m going to fix it before going further. No power for rolling hills. This trailer is 3800 lbs empty and we have a 100 lb generator, 50 lb floor jack and two people in truck.

I see the ERG valve has some kind of big fitting on it that looks hard to loosen.

There is nothing wrong with the EGR valve itself is it? You are right, they can be difficult to get off sometimes. If your idle is smooth, and when you connect straight manifold vacuum to the EGR the engine stalls out, then the valve itself is ok.

I am away from and don’t have tools to remove, will try to. Get control sensor regulator thing and see what happens. Idles and reeves fine under no load.
