Jumped into my 01 after work today and the key wouldn't turn. I messed with it quite a bit and couldn't get it to budge. Using some very basic tools that I happened to have on me, I was able to remove the lock cylinder completely, and eventually free it up enough to turn the truck on when it was reinstalled. There's a little spring loaded tab/detent near the bottom of the cylinder that can be pushed in while turning it to free it up.
Replacing the lock cylinder is the easy button, but then I'd have separate keys for the ignition and door locks which I'd like to avoid. I'm also not sure if a replacement ignition key would even work on my 01 since it looks like it has a security chip on the bottom of the column directly under the key switch. Anybody ever repaired a lock cylinder successfully? I think I'll give it a try on my next day off.
Until then, I drive the racetruck to work
