My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
get the five speed. i test drove a 3.0 with automatic and it was horrible. then when we got our current ranger with 3.0 and five speed, i didn't realize it was a v6 since i got it from my uncle and never popped the hood. this truck gets excellent gas mileage for a v6 mid sized truck and is fun to drive, but it only does all taht with the five speed standard transmission.

i drive mine between 80 and 85 and get 19mpg on highway only trips. i cannot tell you the city mileage because i never have only city driving but its usually combined 16to17 when i do check it with city mixed into the equation.

but the stick is the only way i would ever get a 3.0 or a 4 cylinder ranger.

that is fair i would say. it really depends on where you live and terrain you drive in.....this owner seems to have been getting by fine until the shift scheduling began to get janky....may just need some lucas in it.

i thought the auto 3.0 was ok in the detroit area....the ones i have driven....in appalachia.....no way.

of course...i would also never own one.

if you gave me one i would sell it or put a turbo 4 whizzer or 4.0 in it at the very least.....if i were going to swap a a4ld out for an m50d in a 3.0 truck.....it would have a good running 4.0 attached to it.

Grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s
i wonder if he can just run some type of stuff through the fluid for a bit and than do a change or two with a new filter and get back to normal shifting?

it worked in my 05 mazda6 (which has a lot of stuff with fomoco stamped on it)

I got a 2013 Silverado 1500 with 20x12 hostiles and 33x12.50 Maxxis Rzrs, plus a straight piped 5.3. So, you can kind of see my dilemma with gas milage. I'll be driving it on paved roads daily ~10 miles once I move to Missouri.

Straight piped chevy? You are beyond help. I dont understand the "make it sound like a garbage truck" mentality. Put a 2.5 X pipe & some flowmasters on that thing.

New to forum so excuse me if I’m intruding on this post

I have a 1995 Ford Ranger 4.0 stepside
With A4LD box 4 speed

box is completely fried and not worth repairing according to to two trans workshops

I’m based in Capetown South Africa (we don’t have many A4LD gearboxes here) purchased Ranger from a gentleman that brought it in from Canada in the 90s

really want to get my Ranger going again so looking for alternative options in terms of gearboxes(not the most mechanically inclined individual)
Purchased a barra 4.0 motor and auto box complete hoping to get it to fit but no chance of that without cutting away(which is not a option)

option A replacing engine and trans with a 02 Ranger.

option b (I would prefer) finding a suitable replacement box for her
There are few fmx and uz boxes around

These people say they will ship internationally. If you do not have a pool of wrecked rangers to draw from, you are going to have to ship something in. Might as well be the correct trans if you have to go through all that trouble.

The A4LD was used in 1986 to 1994 Rangers
1995 and up used the 4R and 5R versions of the A4LD

Easy to tell the difference
On drivers side just in front of shift arm is the Solenoid connector
A4LD has a round 3 wire connector
4R/5R has a square 16 wire connector

you might try chasing down guys that put Taurus SHO/Yamaha engines in buggies and sand rails
they needed a Vulcan adapter plate to mount various transmissions. they may know of sources for adapters.

there were extremely rare Aerostars that had manuals with a detachable bell housing.
