There never was a V-8 Explorer with a manual trans and no '05' Rangers had the PAT's. SVT has suggested several times to do a complete dash and wiring swap. See no reason not to use a '99-2000' Explorer for the harness and dash to swap. It also takes a couple of modules for the swap. You would have to deal with the PAT's. Several ways to get the end results.

96-01 V8 explorers did not have 4x4, they were either 2wd or all wheel drive. The transfer case is a single speed case, so there is nothing to shift. 2002 is the year the explorer had both a body style change as well as going to the modular 4.6. The 4.6 was not available in 01 as the motor is too wide for the body. If you plan to use the manual trans, I recommend the T5, like previously mentioned. Your truck doesn't have pats, but the 99-01 ECU does, and the ECU controls the pats.
96-97 no pats return style fuel system 3 wire cps
98 pats return style fuel system 2&3 wire cps (this year was a transition year to my knowledge)
99-01 pats returnless fuel system 2 wire cps
Both style ECU's can be reprogrammed to run either style fuel system, and also can have pats and auto trans deleted from the programming. This gives you some options on looking for a donor. The dash can be swapped, however you can keep your dash and just swap the dash harness. In 04 I believe ford changed the instrument cluster and the steering wheel. You can keep these, however repinning will be required of the instrument cluster. You can keep your steering column, just remove the auto shifter...

yeah but i can get a donor 96-00 v-8 explorer and swap EVERYTHING into the ranger except for the trans. I could use a t5 with an extended shifter and im going to have to get it tuned anyway because of the motor work im doing to the car but they could tune in for it being manual?

but the donor car having pats or not wont matter because if im swapping everything then the pats will come with it, correct?! i should just try and go for a 99-01 donor car so i dont have to create a return fuel line? but then i will need the key so i can do the pats stuff.

96-97 can be used, no pats to deal with, need to run a return line.
98 need dash harness swap for pats and return line ran.
99-01 needs dash swap for pats.

Swapping the harness/dash will solve the pats, and yes, you do need the steering column and preferably the key(s). Getting it tuned can also delete pats and/or auto trans. You can also delete the rear O2 sensors, egr, any and/or all emmision components, etc.

That is awesome! Thanks for that info SVT! it sounds like i will plan on doing a 99-01 swap and get the dashboard with pats. Will be better for security on the car and then i can also have the lock and uncock from the key right?

You will actually have a 4 door circuit for the power windows, the plugs should be the same at the kick panel where the harness goes through the door. Check your door harness, as you may or may not have the wires there. If it doesn't, you will need to pull both front door wiring harnesses to have power windows.
There is also another option you can add, but there will be additional mods to do. If your donor has the keypad on the door (keyless entry pad), you can also install this on your truck, but you will need to cut your door to install the keypad. This can be very useful as I found the code for my sport Trac, I was able to unlock the doors even with the ignition on...

I was wondering if i would need to use the explorer springs and shocks as well to support the weight of the 5.0 or will the ranger suspension work?

The ranger suspension will hold the extra weight just fine.

The 302 is only about 75 lbs heavier than the 4.0 V6...
