It appears to be an alternative to the Torsen approach for a mechanically limited slip diff.

Got a tracking number this evening. Not that I can work on the truck for two weeks or anything... It's across town at a friend's shop and I just got a positive test result back.

Any update on this?

That post was a mistake as it turned out, the tracking number was for a lightbulb I'd ordered at the same time. I eventually cancelled the order because it never came in stock and I finally had the truck reassembled.

I don't have an update on whether it's going to work on our trucks. Sorry!

I received a phone call about an hour ago directly from Torsen indicating the SLA diff is available again.

The voicemail actually suggested that I call them directly if interested. Here's the contact:
Rob Currie
585-464-5009

I'm holding off because I'm still looking into the Powertrax alternative that sort of fell into my lap a couple of months ago.

From a post at Explorer Forum - this round of Torsen units for the Dana 35 SLA won't make it to the website until everyone on the waiting list has been contacted and given the opportunity to order. So if you want one, give them a shout.

On a related note, I just got a message back from Powertrax regarding their Grip Pro unit... And I'm more confused than ever.

They have the GT443527 flagged for rear axle use. Other than that, it's listed with the same usage criteria as the LK443527 (a full carrier locker). Dana 35 27 spline, 3.54 carrier or higher, drilled for 8 3/8 or 7/16 ring gear bolts.

Their response is that the GT version has 'no provision to retain the axles in an IFS front'. I feel like I'm losing my mind - what does the carrier on the SLA axle do to retain the axles? I thought they could be removed without doing anything at all to the differential itself.

I think I dealt with Rob when I had a few questions on the Torsen before I brought mine. He was pleasant (and patient) to deal with.

That powertrax part is actually the part that would go in the rear axle Dana 35 that is found on Jeeps. I have that Dana 35 axle in my 92 Cherokee, and I don't think it would work because of the rotation design, or something along those lines. Even though they are both "Dana 35", they are different. I just remember that it was not a viable alternative.

If I were you, I would get the Torsen while you can. Being that the last year Ranger that it would fit is over 10 years old, it may be possible that this is the last run that they will do.

The rotation is the same - our Dana 35 SLA front end uses a standard rotation gear set (unlike the reverse rotation gears used in the earlier TTB axles). That's why I'm unclear on the issue.

check this thread.
the ring is compressed to slide into the side gear, then expands on the other side of the gear.
to install or remove the outer gear needs a slight taper to compress the ring.
a straight edge (like a rear axle shaft) will just crash into the ring but not compress it.

think of installing pistons, if you don't compress the rings the piston is "locked out" of the cylinder.
