xBLAKEx's 1988 Supercab Build

Well I ran into some bad news tonight.. I have coolant in my oil.. My pap said it's most likely a cracked head. So now I've decided to stop what I'm currently doing, and save up for a swap. Not sure if it'll be the 4.0 I'm gonna have to research a lot more before i decide. I'm pretty bummed right about now.

I also have decided that i will be sasin my truck wayy dooooowwwwwnnnnn the road, most likely an early bronco D44 or shortened full size D44, and the 8.8 in the rear, so what ever i swap in will have to be able to manage bigger axles. My question is where to start when planning an engine swap?

I think he was going for "rednecktified" 2 stage spring, but didn't have the cash to invest in King Coilovers! :icon_rofl:

Haha yeah i have no idea what the guy was thinking!

Been researching on an engine swap. And it's the 4.0L Cologne OHV V6 or in 97 the 4.0L SOHC or the 5.0L V8 [ 302 ]

I know for the 5.0 in 96 the 4R70W transmission was standard, but was there ever a manual transmission that bolted up to it?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but not in an exploder. But the 5.0L bolts up to M5OD-R2 from an F150 and I believe a ZF-5 from 3/4 and 1 ton early 90s Fords. I think the F150 tranny and 1356 t-case would be the easiest route for a manual, but I think the 1356 t-case is a bit wide for the frame. This means creativity on your part. And you'll probably have to do something about your drive shafts.

IMO, i'd either rebuild what you have or bite the bullet and go V8. I personally wouldn't take the time to swap anything else in because I would just wished I put a V8 in :icon_thumby:

i 2nd that, rebuild what u have or go V8. Its just as much work droping a newer 4.0 in as do a 5.0 swap.

You may want to swap a D35 up front if you go with the V8. Not immediately, but if you have a heavy foot that D28 up front won't last long :D

If you decide to do the 5.0 go with a HO it'll give you 100 horses more than a reg 5.0. If you go full roller it'll up the HP even more! A stock 302 produces 150 horses while a HO has 250. As far as manual transmissions you can put a ZF 5 Spd, a M5OD, Borg warner T-18 or a NP 435. The easiest ones to find will be the T-18 and NP435 they're almost identical but the t-18 has a aluminum top. The M5OD will work great as long as you're not abusive to it. The ZF is really hard to find unless you get it off E-Bay. It has the best of both worlds though. It's fully synchronized and has the super low 1st gear for crawling.
Here's a page I found that is full of info on these ford transmissions. http://classicbroncos.com/tech/zf-5-speed-manual-transmission-guide

SOHC didnt come around til 2001.... :icon_confused:

Thanks for all the help guys! I'll have to check out those sites after work.I think I'm just gonna go for the 302 and not waste my time. That's if I can comes by one, I'm trying to get a wrecked explorer because its cheaper and I could get the axles at the same time..

(Edit) From what I've read on other sites it said 1997 for the Explorer, and 2001 for the Ranger.

Alright so I've done some researching about the 302 swap and seems like there's a lot more to it then i thought. You've said it just about the same as dropping in a 4.0?

I gathered up some things that have to be done to swap in the 302, into a first generation ranger.

But i have some questions, because it wasn't explained very well in the tech library..

-Obviously New Engine Mounts

-Oil Filter

[ Adapter or Relocation Kit. I kinda get it, there will be clearance issues with the steering box..]

-New Oil Pan

[ Why can't you use the stock oil pan that's on the engine, instead of a single sump or dual sump? The engine isn't from the 60's or 70's so it should fit the ranger right? ]

-Exhaust Manifold

[ You can use the stock manifold from the 302 with no clearance issues? ]

-Power Steering Pump

[ Can you use the stock 302 pump with the V8 brackets? ]

-Heater Box

[ You have to melt or modify it to clear the valve cover, got it ]

-Alternator

[ Stock 302 Alternator will work? ]

-Radiator

[ If i were to use the '95+ Explorer Radiator, what modifications have to be done to the core support? ]

-Fan

[ Stock 302 fan won't work? ]

If I'm missing things that have to be done to swap in the 302, let me know.

-Obviously New Engine Mounts

I used the V-6 mounts but cut 1/4" flat plate and raised the driver side mount 1" by redrilling the holes up higher. I also added 1/2" of washers to level the motor out.

-Oil Filter

[ Adapter or Relocation Kit. I kinda get it, there will be clearance issues with the steering box..]
A filter relocator kit is required. I picked up a universal kit off eBay for like $30 I'll check out the parts # for you when I get home tues.

-New Oil Pan

[ Why can't you use the stock oil pan that's on the engine, instead of a single sump or dual sump? The engine isn't from the 60's or 70's so it should fit the ranger right? ]

I had a dual sump on my original motor but then the second block I used the stock pan and it fit fine with almost 3" of clearance with the cross member.

-Exhaust Manifold

[ You can use the stock manifold from the 302 with no clearance issues? ]

I bought the advance adapter shorty headers.

-Power Steering Pump

[ Can you use the stock 302 pump with the V8 brackets? ]

I used the f-150 pump and brackets. I also ran a serpentine belt setup. Fits great and I like it a lot.

-Heater Box

[ You have to melt or modify it to clear the valve cover, got it ]

-Alternator

[ Stock 302 Alternator will work? ]

The donor alt wiring should be either spliced into the ranger's or use the ranger plug and rewire the plug with the 302 wires.

-Radiator

[ If i were to use the '95+ Explorer Radiator, what modifications have to be done to the core support? ]

I used a BeCool radiator and it fits inside the core support.

-Fan

[ Stock 302 fan won't work? ]

I used a fan off a f-150 5.0

If I'm missing things that have to be done to swap in the 302, let me know.

Thanks Rowdy, if you could get that part number that would be great. A relocation kit on Summit was like $90! ha I'm not going to cut corners, but I'm always down to save some money!
