Why a v8

This is a lovely free-for-all of apples and oranges.
A RBV with an INJECTED 302 is going to WASTE any N.A. stock ranger engine.

I sincerely hope that you are right, I put in 3 afternoons wiring effort to keep the EFI because I have already left carbed guys behind with my 2.9L

The owner of a RBV with a FORCED INDUCTION AND INJECTED 302 shouldn't even waste the air he breathes talking to some yipyap with a 2.3 or v6 ranger who thinks they're some leviathan.

Agreed, but off topic, like all the other F.I. guys.

And the only remaining arguement the yippie dogs here with turbo limas will try to use to make themselves feel better is "durrrrr.....the 5.0 will make it so nose heavy it'll be a pig.......durrrrrr". Which of course is complete crap.....a 5.0 weighs MAYBE 100 pounds more than a V6.

Perhaps, but stepping from a 2.9L + A4LD with proper camber, up to a 5.0L + AOD I noticed a ~ 3 to 5 deg change is camber. (This will be corrected with spring spacers)

this whole thread has gotten out of hand, it wasnt suppsoed to comparing 2.3 turbo to anything else, he was talkin about a stock 302 in a ranger with stock gearing bein a total turd vs a 4.0 ranger geared

getting out of hand is the way a lot of threads go. Like I said I have both 4.0 and , well I guess now a 347. If I had it to do all over again I would have just used a nice 4.0. Sometimes the V-8 is a real PITA whereas the 4.0 just keeps plugging away.

i said those were the first things i did, there are many many other nickle and dime stuff im not gonna take the time out to type
there isnt much nickel and dime gonna give you 350 WHEEL HP with a gt 40 302, unless youre using stuff youre not talking about...like maybe a turbo

dude, u really can be a ass cant u, its fully ported, oversized stainless valves, hardened valve seats and roller rockers, the head was shaved down and bench flowed, i dont have to list every little thing done to my motor to prove it to someone like you

makes me wonder what u actually know about buildin engines....

now lets try and stay on topic

I think upgrading a 4.0 to any type of 302 is a complete waste of time and money for an offroading rig.

With my gearing I have enough power to put over 25,000 ft. lbs. of torque to the wheels. That's enough to snap a u-joint or the sector shaft between my cases like a toothpick. Why on earth would I want more power?

it aslo depends on alot of what kind of wheelin ur doin, i do alot more mud, so the power at slightly higher rpm's is good so i can have nice wheel spin to keep me moving

i would never need a doubler for the kind of wheelin and trail runnin i do, and i think those trucks with a stock 302 and stock gears would do alot better in the mud then rocks thats for sure

Because my friend's '79 Fairmont with a stock 5.0L HO 3.25 gear rear end w/ AOD will strait smoke the shit out of my friend's '98 4.0L SOHC Explorer?

Yes, a '79 Fairmont weighs 2,500# for a coupe and 2,700# for a wagon. A '98 Explorer weighs 4,200#.

Let's see what my super-duper program says--that 225hp Fairmont should do the 1/4 in 14.2 seconds at 100mph. The fat-ass 205hp Explorer should do it in 17.0 seconds at 81mph. To get a 4,200# car to keep up with a 225hp 2500# car, you would need 380hp of the factory installed type.

Some people throw the word horsepower around like it means something.

It only means something if you are comparing apples to apples.

Below is a page from a 1968 Chevy pickup manual. The give the rating in 2 ways--gross and net. In cars, they lsted only gross until 1972. The base Ford 302 that was rated at 200hp in 1968 was only putting out maybe 160hp by modern ratings. The 5.0 rated at 225hp in a Mustang would have been a 280hp motor in 1968.

So could you get 300 gross hp out of a 302 for $1,000? That would be 240 at the crank. If you had 5.0 GT heads you could. If you had a set of piece of shit heads, not a chance. If you want 300 modern horsepower--you need aftermarket head.

I always have to ask, where is the air coming from? You need air to make power. The street Boss 302 was rated at 290hp from Ford--which would be 230hp-about the same as a 5.0 Mustang and at a higher rpm. In fact, that was a popular race in magazines when the 5.0 GT was just out. I think the GT usually won. What are you thinking your wiffle heads are going to do?

True, turning your wheels at 2 RPM doesn't do well in deep mud, even if you have a ton of torque. For deep mud it's nice to have the HP to turn big tires quickly.

The problem with your arguement is the GT-40P heads are pretty decent for OEM wheezer heads. I fully believe you could build 350 ft/lb of torque at the same rpm any cologne engine peaks at with them and OEM EFI such as the 93 GT.

not being an ass, just bringing the reality. did you use the seat of the pants dyno? ask any body i build engines for. i aint believin it. ive built many many motors. including many many modulars. i guess if you buy a real head you could instantly have 500 rwhp huh? it takes a little more than what youve done to get more than 400 hp out of a 302

ok here's my question. are all of the v8 nah-sayers on drugs? the whole reason for puttin a sbf, regardless of modifications, into a rbv is because of the TORQUE CURVE. i cannot believ i even have to tell ppl this. a v6 makes any and all its power with the more rpms it turns. a v8 makes torque lower in the rpm range, DUH!!! so even if u regear ur hunk of crap 4.0l u still have to rev the motor to the friggin moon to make torque.

im still dumb founded

and for a lil reference i have a ranger with a stock 5.0l and my old work tuck was the same cab and bed length with a 4.0l that was a 2003 and my 5.0l would rip its balls off and still get 14mpg WITH A HOLLEY 4BBL!!! learn how to tune ur truck with a carb and it will make more power than efi. and still get decent milage. the only upside to efi is its reliability.

and a v8 sounds better than a v6

THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT!!!!

u go on beleivein what u want, ill jsut keep in mind to put ur motor advice along with ur advice on cats.....

maybe this should be moved to "the garage"????

idk man, i aint knockin anyone on here, i know what i got, but u get some people that cant beleive it.

i agree with u on what u said, the discussion just sort of wandered off the normal path, prolly would be best for it to end up in the garage with a NSFW tab
