Why a v8

I think the 5.0 is a waste when there are more modern engines that make some decent power from the factory sitting in junkyards for cheap. People will prolly yell at me cause its not a ford and people are stupid and have some sort of dumb loyalty but, the chevy Vortech 5.3 and 6.0 motors are about the same physical size as a 5.0 and they make much better power. The 6.0 would prolly need a new hood as its taller but the 6.0 can be had for around 60-70K miles for around 1000 dollars. The 5.3 can be found for around 500 is you look hard enough.

it boils down to the simplicity of a carburated motor, versus the wiring nightmare im sure a chebbie 6.0 would cause.

i myself have been workin on a chebbie driven bII, however its been on the back burner for sometime, the plan has been modified to include a mild lt1, the rears will be toyota rears(despite there beeing narrower)

Have you put one in? Those late model engines are pretty intense to swap, they need a lot of the vehicle wiring to go a long with them.

If I would undertake something like that I would rather go with the 2v 5.4 and have more low end power than I would know what to do with in such a little truck.

I like my V8. Mind you it's not my DD either. As for why I built it; because a guy said it couldn't be done. I had an old Ranger just sitting there and a 302 that I got for $50 as part of a trade for some work I was doing. In all honesty, the V8 just sounds better to my ears. It has nothing to do with performance it's just a personal preference. God help me if I were to drive it every day. At $1.25 a litre I'd be "car poor" pretty damn fast.

if you dont have the money and want more power over the 2.9 or something to replace the crappy 3.0...go with the 4.0...grate little v6 for every day weelin with 33s or somethin...if you want big and have the money..swap in a built up 302....but if you go with a 2bbl carbed 302 from an 81 f-140....ferget it

thats what i did, get a good starting motor from a old gt350, and built it up from there, good realiable power and if i pussy foot it i can squeeze 15mpg out of it

i have always wanted to do a exotic engine swap....something different. Always thought about the Yamaha SHO taurus engine or a newer SHO V8

i was toying around with putting a 22ret motor i had into one....but i decided against it, and it went into my old pavement pounder yota(long gone)

what i still want to see done is someone build a 347 twin turbo for a ranger, the man that does that will earn mine (and im sure many others) eternal respect, dont matter if its street or not.

somebody is doing it on here i believe. they bought my old twin turbo SBF kit to put in a ranger i think

So I am curious, how are you guys adapting the emission systems when you do this v-8 conversion, as I remember it is ILLEGAL to disable emission components such as catalytic converters, egr's and the such.

As responsible off roaders, I assume we are being responsible to the enviroment?....and that is more than just "tread lightly"

Thats exactly what I have in mind. I had plans for a built 302/ AOD swap for some time now and have gotten absolutely nowhere with it. Not an issue with money, just no time. But I've been having 2nd thoughts about the whole thing because even after installing the V8, I'll still have to upgrade the axles and 4.10 D35 are a bit hard to find.

So I am ordering 4.56 ( maybe 4.88 )gears for a D35 and 8.8. Found a used Detroit E-Z locker for a Jeep D35 and am looking for a Jeep carrier now. The axles I'll get for next to nothing and the whole project should run for about $600.

If I still need more omph , I'll do a 4.0l and not worry about breaking driveshafts or axles.

If you have a 2.9 or 3.0, chances are the tranny you have from the factory won't care too much for a 4.0 anyway. So while you are changing the engine and transmission...

It is entirely possible to keep the emissions equipment functional on the engine from the donar to pass emissions.

heres the best way to adapt it...take smog pump and throw away. dont disable the cats, jsut dont put them on. put egr spacer on , just dont plug it in. works just fine

Yes my Albertan friend, that is a good run-down of my situation too! lol.
I spent some, not ridiculous on this V8 thing, but DAMN it took me toooooo long. To the point where its not fun to go out and work on it anymore, but it has to get done! It needs out of the shop!
Atleast its rolling under it's own power now!
