'87 2.3 4x4 5speed, trying to drop the trans. I have it all disconnected, and it's almost out... but I think I'm hitting the firewall, and it won't back out the rest of the way to drop out.

So what's the trick here?

Remove the y-pipe or drop the radius arm cross member.

Disconnect the exhaust hangers. That should let the motor rock back enough to clear the pinch weld. It has worked for me. I usually unbolt the exhaust to make things go smoother. I have the equipment needed to remove broken exhaust studs though.

Note to self: disconnect slave cylinder hose before trying to remove transmission.

Got it seperated now, though the snap I heard was my slave cylinder hose. Whoops. Guess I forgot that one!
