What kind of oil do you run in your 4.0L?

Like I said, they have worked on millions of vehicles without problems. They are just a rip off when it comes to price vs. quality. You can get much better filters for less money. A FRAM most likely won't do any damage, but it definitely will not benefit you either. You are much better off with something like a Motorcraft since you get a much better quality filter for a lower price.

I believe you when you say that you have had no problems with FRAMs, but they were a waste of money when you could have bought a better quality filter at a lower price.

I'll take the 8 bucks a year I overspent and be thankful I did not have to spend 1 hour at the dealership at $75 plus an hour.

All in good fun, sir

Good luck

Umm....you can get a Motorcraft filter at Walmart for about $3.50. They're in the same aisle as the Frams.

You didn't get it but thank you.

Good luck

The GOLD STANDARD is used oil analysis. Try it with synthetic. Try it with conventional. You'll find a significant difference.
I will occasionally send my used oil to a lab just for kicks. Tried a few syns and blends over the years, so far the lowest wear metals on all my family's cars came with Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic. Mobil 1 was good, as expected*. Motorcraft Blend is nearly as good.

* For whatever reason, the UOA on Mobil 1 Truck & SUV came back awful and they advised me not to run it more that 3000 miles. :icon_confused:
I'd say stick with the plain Mobil 1 if you want Mobil 1.

i typically run 3 quarts lucas 2 quarts penz.

I thought all the "special" Mobil 1's weren't synthetic at all, and didn't claim to be (except for name confusion).

As far as I know, the Mobil 1's are synthetic. The Mobil Clean 5000 and Clean 7500 oils are not although they have a bottle and label that looks very similar to Mobil 1.

Not to sound like a broken record but avoid FRAM filters, they're junk. Stick to motorcraft, purlator, napa gold, wix, ext.

justify that statement about fram your worrying me what do i not know(edit wait never mind jumped the gun before i read the rest of the thread)

what would you guys run on a 4.0 with low oil pressure this winter?

A 1991 in California? 10W-30. Maybe if you drive it up to Nunavut you might consider 5W-30.

Trying to get the oil pressure up by playing with viscosity is a bit like trying to engrave a fancy pattern with a two handed sledgehammer. It is very possible -- even likely -- to have wide clearances in some parts of the engine and normal clearances in others. Heavy oil in normal clearances damages them.

thats how it works. actually a 91 with a 93 engine ran by a maryland 92 system:icon_twisted:.

the truck it came out of was a highschoolers beater that he flipped on its side at speed and flipped the fuel cut off.

it had no thermostat when pulled and will start to smokin a little if i tilt my truck a lot wheeling.has low compression(worst is about 150psi) in all cylinders but one,but at least it has no sunk valves.

the oil gauge is a joke from the factory but it read higher with the 2.9, about 'M' and now with the 4.0 it reads 'N' with 10w-40.it has cold lifter tick for a few seconds after letting it sit for days.

do you guys think 10w-30 will lower it to an unsafe level? what cheap oil might you try?

she is my cheap test roach while i look for or build a good 4.0.almost 18 mpg ain't bad for a near death engine i'll run it till i don't trust it to make it to town

I use Castrol 5w-20 synthetic blend and I've used Fram filters off and on for 40 years and never had a problem.

Does Ford call for 5w20 in the newer 4.0's?
