What kind of oil do you run in your 4.0L?

i run Motorcraft 5w30 blend year round and a Carquest Premium filter (same exact filter as a wix). I just switched from the Carquest oil (same as the valvoline) and not that it was bad, but the Motorcraft is awesome. and its CHEAP!!

Not to sound like a broken record but avoid FRAM filters, they're junk. Stick to motorcraft, purlator, napa gold, wix, ext.

I've been worried about the possiblility of leaks at the gaskets since I have 65,000 miles and used 5W30 conventional (Castrol GTX) the whole time. Change at 5,000 interval. Bought used and drive much, tired of changing oil though, synthetic would extend oil changes maybe to 10,000 mi maybe? What do the masses say?

I am not a Mobil 1 salesman; you were looking for extended drain intervals; I knew Mobil1 advertised 15,000--there you go.

BMW tested Delvac1 in its passenger-car engines and recommended 30,000 mile intervals.

I use Mobile 1 Clean 5000. I switched to that a couple of oil changes ago.

Does walmart have sales on their oil? I never really shop there but there is one right around the corner from my house. I think I am going to start buying my oil there in the 5 court jug. Just wanted to know if its ever on said cause its like $25ish a jug if i remember right.

WM in my area has Valvoline synthetic for $19 right now. Pretty sure M1 is regular $25 price.

When I had my 4.0 Explorer it got either Motorcraft 5W-30 or Kendall GT1 5W-30 and any cheap filter. It didn't seem to care regardless of what I used. It didn't burn any between changes, even with over 150K on the original engine.

Cheaply made materials, sometimes the case explodes, other times the internals will disintegrate and clog oil passages. There was a website up for a while comparing a bunch of oil filters. I've cut them open myself as well.

The issue with FRAM is price vs. quality. They spend their money on advertising and not on their filters. A FRAM probably won't do any damage, millions of vehicles have them, but you can buy better or equal quality filters for less than a FRAM. Even $2 Super Tech filters from Wal-Mart are at least on par with a FRAM in quality, but they cost less. Motorcraft filters are usually cheaper and are much higher quality with silicone anti-drainback valves (depending on the part #) and metal end caps on the filter media (vs. glued paper on FRAMS).

No oil related failures. 79 oil and filter changes

1993 Explorer 4.0 owned from 2001 at 89,000 presently 167,000 Fram PH8A, quality oil. No oil related failures. 25 oil and filter changes.

1994 Ranger 4.0 165,000 original miles. Fram PH8A, quality oil. No oil related failures. 55 oil and filter changes.

From a sample of roughly 159 Fram filter installations, I can conclude a: Ford builds a hell of a good product, b: Fram products work as advertised, c: I spend a lot of time changing oil.

Like I said, they have worked on millions of vehicles without problems. They are just a rip off when it comes to price vs. quality. You can get much better filters for less money. A FRAM most likely won't do any damage, but it definitely will not benefit you either. You are much better off with something like a Motorcraft since you get a much better quality filter for a lower price.

I believe you when you say that you have had no problems with FRAMs, but they were a waste of money when you could have bought a better quality filter at a lower price.
