What is the 'S' gear for?

Nope.
Nope.
Nope.

I'm going to stick with "Sideways".

That was on Alf. I forget why but he had to shift the transmission into sideways in one episode, it is running joke in my family now. "did you try shifting into sideways?"

Edit: to save a Polka Jamboree

Did you say Polka Jamboree???

"D" is "Don't want to shift. You do it for me."

I thought 'D' was for donuts.

Are you allowed to make donut jokes about cop cars?
A late 70's cruiser had about 150hp from the 351 and wouldn't be capable of the other kind of donut except on snow covered roads or dirt.

150 seems choked down for a 351, that era of motor was good for 235 when in a boat, must be polution garbage causing such a limited output, Heck I think the ‘74 300-6 put out 145 (in a F250)

Possibly. Pollution controls were directly responsible for the demise of the 289. The 302 was introduced as the replacement and the increased size was to add back the power robbed from things like AIR pumps.

A late 70's 302 made 139 hp so I extrapolated about 150 for a 351. The car makers were struggling to meet the emissions standards, they dropped the compression to tolerate unleaded fuel, which caused increased hydrocarbons, leaned out the fuel mix, retarded the cam and spark advance, and choked up the exhaust with early cats. Then they added EGR valves which caused surging and hesitation, and "saved money" by casting the thermactor passages into the heads which really crimped the exhaust flow. A V8 Mustang II would get about 12 mpg on average, the 351M/C6 F150's that were so popular could squeeze out 13 mpg in the warm months with a careful driver and drop to single digits in the winter. I had a lot of fun in the 70's because I was young but it wasn't all good, I got my first mortgage in 1976- at 8 1/4% interest. When I refinanced it went to 10 3/4%.

I doubt you are too far off at 150hp

8%, wtf?

People are getting sub 3% interest rates now.

mine is 3 3/4%, then they dropped and I thought I was getting boned.

They went well north of 20% in the early 80’s...
