What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Oil change and put a new air filter in. All the Purolator stuff is dirt cheap at advanced auto because they stopped carrying it.
Not sure on the Purolator oil filters... but the Motorcraft oil filters have an anti drain back valve. I think it's a pretty big deal with the 4.0L SOHC. You don't want drain back...chain tensioners need oil quick.

I had no idea what that was, i googled it and apparently the Purolator boss filters have that. Good to know to look for that if i ever switch it up.

Well, not as much progress as hoped, but progress was made…

Trans crossmember is about 75% done for the Choptop. I had hoped on done and installed, but things took longer than expected. Is what it is. I now have another set of 6-ton jack stands and I’ve discovered that Diablo grinding disks are well worth the price of admission.

Standby, tomorrow we start tearing things apart, lol

So, it was a long day and progress was made. If I can pull off another long day tomorrow, I should have the pinion angle fixed in the Choptop. Today I got the transmission crossmember done enough to install and installed. I’d kind of like to do a couple other things to the crossmember, but it’s in there and as is it will do better than what janky stuff I had in there before… that lasted probably 15 years, lol.

New leaf spring perches are sitting on my bench ready to go sans centering pin hole. I have it center punched, I just didn’t get around to finding out what size I needed to drill before it got dark and I really didn’t feel like figuring it out by flashlight. Sounds like tomorrow’s problem at this point. Easy enough to drill out quick.

Well, that didn’t go as planned…

Choptop hopefully won’t blow off the jackstands tonight, because it’s been really windy. I don’t like the wind.

Ran out of oxygen in the shop torch set. I was only half done with the torch at that point. Right about that point it started raining as well. Since my roof over my work area is the sky, that was a problem. I hid in the shop and did a bit of shop work. Got my new extension cord for the shop all together. In between rain I went and dragged the oxygen tank from the shed over to the shop so we have oxygen to continue tomorrow because I can’t afford to be down a day and I don’t have money for a refill, especially because this empty tank needs pressure tested I’m sure. It’s always something.

These are first production (test stage) upper control arms for lowering a torsion bar Ranger. Wish I was ready to install and test them on the green Ranger but that’s going to be a bit yet. Decided to give y’all a sneak peek though

My directional signals died, so I put in a new flasher button. It’s supposed to be one of the loud ones. I guess if you have your head under the dashboard, it’s louder than the old one, but at least they’re working again.

Turn up your hearing aid.

Well, yesterday continued work on the Choptop. Spring perches got welded in place after a lot of careful fighting with it (would have been way easier with two people). The oxygen tank from the shed had plenty of gas, I might just swap it for the one in the shop if I’m ambitious enough to dig that one out soon.

Anyway, it appears the driveshaft needs some clearancing. Full droop and it touches the yokes slightly so a little grinding should get it serviceable for now. Unfortunately that means I don’t have the Choptop back together yet, so I guess that’s today’s project.

Something apparently shifted slightly when I went to weld up the perches, I’m about 0.3 degrees off but it should fix itself with a little weight in the back and since I still need to do the cage and back seats and stuff, I'm not gonna worry, it’s way closer than it was.

The driveshaft I was worried might end up short, but some measurements and I have roughly 3” of spline engagement at full droop in the slip yoke so that should be plenty good.

I cut up the scrap wood left over from the previous projects and prepped the trailer for picking up the freezer, when help is available. The appliance dolly is strapped down in the trailer. The hard part will be getting the thing down the basement steps. Clearance to the basement door is tight and the steps are on the steep side.

If the rear is higher than it was, you have changed the caster angle. That could make the toe & camber change while driving. Double check your alignment.
I didn't think about that way. Was thinking it'd only change the caster, but since it changed the angle of the plane that toe and camber are adjusted on... Damn. Now I gotta schedule another alignment. I'm gonna wait till after I get rear up some more though.

I could spare an hour or two on Dec 3 if that would be helpful.
