What Catch Cans are y'all running on the 2.3L EcoBoost?

Just curious as to what brand Catch Cans y'all are running on the 2.3L EcoBoost engine?

I've gone back and forth on installing one or not..

Still in the 'not' camp lol.

I don't believe anyone else here with a new truck is either... but I may be mistaken.
 
I don’t recall anyone saying they installed one. From the research I’ve done, it appears that the systems available don’t cover the high pressure side of the system, only the low side. It may just be a misinterpretation on my part.

In any case, the mishimoto system seems to be the most plug and play and best fitting. Stage 3 motorsports offers it as well as some other sellers.

I’m considering one but it’s low on the list and I want to wait until my warranty is up.

Also, there is already an oil separator system that comes with the engine that is bolted onto the side of the block. I can’t say how effective it is but Ford did make an attempt to address the valve coking issue.
 
There are 'stage one' and 'stage two' catch cans IIRC.. each may cover one side of the system I don't remember.


The 2.3 IS direct injection though, yes.

Yes, it is a GDI engine. All Ecoboost engines are. Some have been updated to incorporate a dual direct injection and port injection system to address the valve coking issue.

The 2.3 isn’t one of them but it does have an upgraded oil separator it inherited from the Duratec engine it’s based on.

So, in essence, it has a catch can of sorts already.

I was going to get a catch can until I figured that out. Also I'm seeing complaints online from several people about the tubing for the catch cans getting brittle and breaking after a year or two, particularly from the Mishimoto unit which looks to be the easier one to install. Less complaints about Mountune but it costs more and seems to be more involved to install.
My thinking is if you use synthetic oil and change it regularly the valve coking shouldn't be a problem.

What are you guys trying to fix? Seriously, not trying to be a smart ass. This time.

Oil vapor from the PCV system building up and coking on the intake valves.

DI engines are known to have a problem with that. The official fix is media blasting valves with walnut shells (I think).

Ford addressed the issue on later V6 models by adding a port injection system to wash the oil residue off the valves.
 
Yep, the Gen 2 3.5L EB has both Port and DI fuel systems.

So why not on the I-4's?

The coking issue is drivecycle dependant.

Here in the sticks with lots of highway driving it is unheard of.

Lots of stop and go, short drives it is heard of.

So some dealers never see it and some dealers see a lot if it.
 
With what I know about GDI engines, especially those with turbos, I will be installing a Catch Can on my 2023 Ranger. It helps with 2 issues: 1) intake valve coking and 2) oil getting into the intercooler.

We never had any coking or oil in the intercooler problems so I don't have anything to offer on catch cans. This is a rural area with a lot of 40 mph speed limit secondary roads and some interstate highway. Because things aren't crowded together most people have to drive far enough to warm the engine to go anywhere, maybe that helps. I can't see that one would hurt anything if you wanted to install one.
