i wanna weld my dana 35 for on road and off road. i dont run on pavement on 4x4 often but when i do will this effect my turning.

is this a good idea or just a straight out bad idea??

only lock one hub when your driving on the pavement

Bad idea. Your truck will want to plow straight ahead instead of turning if you weld it (and leaving a hub unlocked will cause it to pull hard to one side (or worse, skid out of control if you ever have to brake or accelerate hard).

Drop-in lockers are not that expensive, I would recommend the Aussie Locker for it.

i figured welding it is a bad idea. i dont have the money right now for a locker. i was tryin 2 be cheap . but some stuff u can cheap out on

if you have stock type ratio then its a good way to get by cause you can just run the welded diff on big runs. but locked d35 + v8 and my stupid foot was pretty ugly. i stayed to brake bias to get by.

i drive 2wd 95 percent of the time on the roads even with snow i like 2 play alot and im just unsure on what 2 do

its the same as a spool. IMO i think welded/ spooled front is ok. its all about throttle control when turning.... and fully locked is really great off-road ***HOWEVER*** i recommend trying to find someone with a spooled/welded front and test it out of see if you can drive with it first before you weld yours just so you know what your getting yourself into!! (i wish i did)

also, you can buy a mini-spool for 30-50 bucks that you can just drop in like a locker, it will still be fully locked however if you hate it you can just take it out and put the spiders back in!

I second the Aussie as it only affects driving characteristics when in 4wd. A welded d35 is going to suck in a dd. You would end up with premature tire wear along with other issues.

wonder what a rear diff would be if welded...mine to be more precise

I'm sorry RSH....... that's a tad confusing man.

He's talking about a front diff d-35 (i guess you could have a rear steer rig with a rear diff being a d-35)

I think you have a 7.5 rear diff, maybe a 8.8 being a sport.

Did you weld yours?

no !! i meant what it would if i weld my rear diff, of course its a stock 7.5
i feel like jacking...

then you would have full time posi-trac...... just like if you ran a mini-spool.

It would wear your rear tires at a slightly accelerated rate (nothing crazy) spin both tires evenly, give you more traction, but a higher chance of fishtailing and spinning out in adverse conditions.

I'd say go for it RSH, I'm going to weld up my stock 7.5 over the weekend. I thought about getting a mini, but what's the point, I'm going to upgrade diffs anyways. and 7.5's are a dime a dozen so not much resale value.
