So when the rpms get fairly high, the engine starts to emit this ticking sound (honestly the closest word to describe it). what is it? Is it Bad? its still running the original spark plugs but then again it only has 57k miles. Any help would be genuinely appreciated guys :icon_confused:

Some more info would be helpful, does the sound change with rpm? Any other symptoms? Could valve/lifter tap, an exhaust leak or even the fan rubbing something.

There is a bomb like in speed?:icon_rofl:

I can only hear the sound at higher rpms. I guess its kind of hard to explain. on top of the usual engine noise, there is a strange ticking, but if you rev the engine but only rev on the low end, it's not there, only high rpms. It's not the fan, I've checked, and I know that it's the engine emitting the sound, so...?

does it coincide with the revs? As in it could be a broken lifter or something?

only in the higher rpms. its like a clicking/ticking sound. at the low end there is a faint, hollow knocking that goes away after you push the accelerator

Could be a ticking lifter or something. Take a stethoscope or long screwdriver and poke it around while it's running to try and find it.

could be engine ping too...caused by gas or possible spark plug mismatch...but with 57k you're probably running the stock plugs....

could also be a small exhaust leak or something to do with your EGR system...do you know what side of the engine it is coming from? If you have a stethescope you can probably narrow it down better...if it's on the passenger side it could be exhaust leak...on the driver side could be everything else...

Advanced Search

I suggest doing an Advanced Search of the forums. I'm sure you'll get a bunch of hits. I read in another thread here that one person addressed the ticking he was having with a Seafoam application into the brake booster. As I recall, this member had an older model Ranger with low mileage like you. It may be a consideration for you.

thanls for the advice man i might try it out :icon_thumby:

does engine ping kinda make a pinging noise. the sound at idle kinda sounds like a hollow, low pitch pinging.
in the owners manual it suggests to change the spark plugs at 60k and i'm pretty close to that now

may try running half a bottle of seafoam through the brake vacuum hose, it stopped my ticking/pinging on my truck. truck will smoke like crazy and will almost stall but it burns all the carbon out.

Seafoam for the ticking

No problem. If you do the treatment, let us know how it worked out. I did the Seafoam in the tank and it helped throttle response after a tank. It surprised me. I haven't done the booster trick yet, but watched quite a few Youtubes on the subject. As Wally points out, lots of white smoke for a bit. Watch a few videos to see how others have done it. One thing to keep in mind about the Youtube videos, while they are a good reference, they can be faulty as well (e.g. I watched a few videos on purging the power steering res. and in the examples, folks cranked the steering wheel quickly, which is not what you want to do). Bottom line is to do your homework, watch the videos, do some reading, and bounce the idea off the experts here. With that in mind, you should be successful, or more so anyway.
