Twister 85 B2 Build

Well, the m5od-r2 takes a 164 tooth flywheel. Since my engine is from 1980, i would want to use a 28 oz flywheel. Correct? I just need to make sure the harmonic balancer is a 28 oz one as well. How can i tell?

I think my friend might have put a different accessory drive on, but i don't know if he changed the harm balancer. I wish i could contact him :annoyed:

I found this one on summit

It should be a 28oz balance, this might help.

The tranny won't care what balance the engine is, it just keeps the engine from rattling itself apart and the tranny should feel zero balance.

If its a 1980 then go to the parts store and tell them you need a harm bal and a flywheel for a 1980 F-150 that had a 5 Spd. Make sure it is the 164 tooth and you'll be set! Then get the clutch too or do you already have that? It should be a 11" clutch.

I highly doubt many 1980 F-150's had 5 speeds. A four speed flywheel "should" work. If the flywheel you already have lines up with the tooth count it would probably work too. The T-5 wasn't available in the Mustang until '83 so somebody has already done some mixing and matching.

Thanks for the link, i think mine might have the 28 oz harm balancer. Ill take a look at it tomorrow, it is a 28 oz one, will the one in my link work?

My friend swapped in the t-5 from a 1990 cobra, so it has been tinkered with a little lol

Balancewise it should work, if the tooth count is right it should work... I don't know how specific Ford engines are switching flywheels among transmissions though. I have only really worked with tractor clutches and you get into different step heights and such with them... they don't specify anything that way in your link and if the regular M5OD flywheel has the same zero step height as the one you are looking at I would think it is a non-issue.

I really hope he (or someone else) swapped in a 302 too, 80-81 you could only get the 255 V8 in a Mustang.

The mustang was an 83, so if it was stock, it would have the 302 :icon_thumby:

If the balance on the flywheel and the harm balancer are to correct the imbalance of the engine, i wouldn't think the transmission would care, but i could be wrong.

Well i took off the crank pulley to take a look a the harm balancer to determine if it is a 28 or 50 oz. It kind of looks like the one in the link 85 posted, which is a 50 oz.

It is the other side that matters though, the size of the counterweight is how you tell.

Ahhh ok, well its a ford one i am going to see if i can find a part number before i rip it off.

Thanks :icon_thumby:

You should be able to feel it, it looks like the counterweight is a little more than half the diameter of the balancer for a 50oz, a 28oz is about half of that (or approx 1/4 the diameter)

The counterweight is the part that sticks out with five holes in the pic that was in my link.

From the looks of things it may not hurt to put a new front seal in it anyway.

Yeah good point, off its coming then :icon_thumby:

Well i got it off, it has the number E2TE-D3A and 112216. From what i have found, i think it is a 50 oz one

I may be wrong but if it uses a 50oz wouldn't it be a HO?

My engine originally wasnt an HO and it has the 50oz but it's also a 91 too.

From what I have read the 302 used a 28 oz one till 81 when they switched to a 50 oz. I dont think it mattered if it was an ho or not.
