Twister 85 B2 Build

From what I have read the 302 used a 28 oz one till 81 when they switched to a 50 oz. I dont think it mattered if it was an ho or not.

:agree:

In my question thread that had all if this that I asked I wad told to get what the engine needed balance size wise, the trans doesn't care about it, all it cares about is if it gets the correct tooth count flywheel for the bell housing and starter.

I am going to pull the flywheel, if it has numbers on it and points towards a 50oz one, i am just going to get a flywheel for the year truck i got my tranny from.

WOOT! I passed 1k posts.

Well i pulled off the flywheel, it appears to be a 50 oz one. So i should be able to buy one for the year truck my transmission came off of.

Another thing, how do i tell if i have a reverse rotation water pump and timing cover? I need to replace the front seal and dont wanna get it all put back together and have it turn out i have the wrong cover.

If i follow fords casting number scheme, my engine is from 1980, the flywheel from 1981 and the balancer is from 1982 :icon_confused:

Here is the flywheel

Do you have serpentine belts or V belts?

Smooth water pump pulley = reverse rotation
Ribbed water pump pulley = standard rotation

From way back on page one, it looks like you have a reverse rotation pump with the WP driving on the flat backside of the belt (making it a smooth pulley)

Do you have serpentine belts or V belts?

Serp can go either way.

Serpentine drive is clock wise V-belt is counter clock wise.

Pretty sure i have a smooth water pump pulley . I am correct is saying an want a standard rotation water pump yes? If so what can i get one from? I thought i read a 5L explorer uses a standard rotation one.

They have reverse rotation pumps.

Danger- is it set up with the belt in the stock patern?

Mine is standard rotation being stock and it's a serp. The exploders have reverse rotation and shorter FEAD.

Easiest thing to do is get us some pictures of the FEAD on your engine.

You have a reverse rotation if you have a smooth pulley. Back in the day V-belts mandated that the water pump turn the same direction as the crankshaft and that is how "standard rotation" came to be. Most serp setups run on the backside of the belt (which requires a smooth pulley) so the water pump spins the opposite way from the crankshaft or reverse rotation.

Explorers are reverse rotation, if you are wanting to convert to that FEAD it really doesn't matter what you have unless it is from a 94-95 Mustang... timing cover, harmonic balancer, water pump and all the brackets and accessories have to be changed anyway. Even with the 94-95 Mustang the only thing that carries over is the timing cover.

Standard rotation with the WP turning the same direction as the crankshaft, 1987 Crown Vic style FEAD my engine came with (and I ran for a year):

Reverse rotation with the WP turning opposite the crankshaft (Explorer FEAD minus the compressor in my truck)

Yours looks like a smooth belt that runs opposite from the crankshaft, reverse rotation. You might check it against Foxbody Mustang stuff to see if that is the FEAD it is.

Heres a pic of the front with all the accessories on it still. When i bought it my friend said he swapped on an accessory drive from an 84 or 85 mustang.

So is there a problem with running a reverse rotation wp? I want a simple FEAD, all i need is alt and p/s.

Nothing at all wrong with a reverse rotation.

I wonder if you could just yank the compressor and get a shorter belt, might check into what a 84-85 non-AC Mustang had for a setup to see if it is similar to what you have just minus the compressor or if it is a completely different thing. Shane96Ranger is a big Foxbody nut, you might drop him a line and see if he has heard anything about how to do it.

The late 80's CV setup (also used in a bunch of other big boring cars) in the first pic of my last post is about as simple as simple can get for the basics. One short micro V belt (more traction than just a V belt) runs on four pulleys, crankshaft, WP, PS pump and alternator. All you need is a water pump, pulleys, and one bracket... no tensioners or idlers. You can reuse the stock PS pump and alternator (although a pump with the return out the back instead of diagonally out the bottom fits better)

All you would be giving up though if you could just delete the compressor on yours is the tensioner... and a tensioner isn't really a bad thing to have vs guessing how tight the belt is as you crank on the alt with one hand and try to tighten the lockdown bolt with the other, and repeating that process a couple times until you get it right (at least that is how I did it)
