Twister 85 B2 Build

Well i measured the adapter, from the mating surface to the top, it measures 1 1/2 inchs, the trans dapt one measures 1 3/8 inch. The perma-cool ones looks to be the same as the trans dapt one.

In an effort to try and save some money, will i be able to run the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate from the mustang. The friend i bought the engine from ran a t-5 behind the the engine.

If not, do i want to buy clutch parts for the year truck the transmission came out of, or am i going to want to buy something more in the time period my engine came from. I thought i read to buy for the year of the transmission but i cant find that thread anymore.

Twister- Up to 85 they had a 30oz (not 100% sure on the actual weight but it is lighter than the 50oz) weighted flywheel or pressure plate. 85 and later it was a 50oz weighted flywheel/pressure plate. Then some manual tran's took a diff tooth count flywheel. A t-18, NP435, ZF-5 took a 164 tooth while a M5OD used a smaller one with 154 tooth (I beleive it was 154 I'm not 100% on the count but it is 150 somethin).

When I went to autozones website, I looked up the flywheel for the years 84-91 on the f150s and they all used the same flywheel, that is, for the 5.0. I'm not sure though when they went to the M5OD-2, but then again those were behind the 4.2 engines too.

There ya go! I didn't think about that lol use the autozone app to look it up!

So, would running a 50oz flywheel on an engine from before 85 hurt anything?

Got some manifolds from 85_ranger4x4 (sorry about being short and not very talkative, im am bad at buying things from people lol :dunno:)

It should take a 50oz flywheel. You'll know when you start it up if it isn't the right one lol it will vibrate like hell.

Twister- Up to 81 they had a 28oz (not 100% sure on the actual weight but it is lighter than the 50oz) weighted flywheel or pressure plate. 81 and later it was a 50oz weighted flywheel/pressure plate. Then some manual tran's took a diff tooth count flywheel. A t-18, NP435, ZF-5 took a 164 tooth while a M5OD used a smaller one with 157 tooth (I beleive it was 154 I'm not 100% on the count but it is 150 somethin).

Fixed it for you. :icon_thumby:

They changed the balance when they went to the one piece rear seal in '81. I don't know what the M5OD used for a ring gear but the options are 164 or 157.

Don't worry about it, it was hot out anyway. :icon_thumby:

So since my engine is from 1980, and the tranny is from 1995 do I want a 28oz or a 50oz? I don't want to buy the wrong one, get it all swapped in and then it be the wrong one.

Well, the m5od-r2 takes a 164 tooth flywheel. Since my engine is from 1980, i would want to use a 28 oz flywheel. Correct? I just need to make sure the harmonic balancer is a 28 oz one as well. How can i tell?

I think my friend might have put a different accessory drive on, but i don't know if he changed the harm balancer. I wish i could contact him :annoyed:

I found this one on summit

If its a 1980 then go to the parts store and tell them you need a harm bal and a flywheel for a 1980 F-150 that had a 5 Spd. Make sure it is the 164 tooth and you'll be set! Then get the clutch too or do you already have that? It should be a 11" clutch.
