I have bought an ugly 97 ranger with a 2.3 and it will not start when turning key it does turn over but will not start but will start when popping the clutch Very bizarre to me never heard of something like this. Any one have a clue???:icon_confused:

Problems with switched powers. A lot of things have two posts on the ignition switch, one for power in run, one for power in start. You are getting power in run, but not in start.

Were would I start to test........ I am thinking to start at the sylanoid. I have a couple spare ones around. Ill start there and then the ignition switch in the colomn

could be a dead starter...

The starter turns the motor but it wont start but if we push and pop the clutch it starts? So starter Can still be bad hmmmmm gives me something to think about I changed the starter a while back ago... I am gonna go mess with the post on it..... I will let you know....

If it turns over, I doubt that it's a 'dead starter' or a bad solenoid. Look into what asdm08 said. It will involve testing and tracing connections.

I think there is a circuit in the ignition system that supplies higher voltage when cranking. It is enabled in the crank position of the ignition switch. I would bet on the ignition switch or the ignition module, with a wire being a long shot.
Wiring diagrams may be here:

ok sorry I have not been on much due to work but I am going to be working on it again I am going to check the wires to and from the starter and check the altenator someone said that there is something there I am changing out the coils also I am going to change the sylanoid and possibly the ignition switch.

I personally would check wires and then the ignition switch first. Those seem like the two main things that would cause this.

Snow ughhhhh No garage not working in the snow but might see if a friend will let me use their garage

New symptom, went to turn it over no power battery dead charged battery it started when bumped lights on and it died no power battery drained fast. checked the cells in the battery they looked fine so I dropped some asprin in them see how that works

Yup...check the wires on the battery (clean the posts)

Then check the wire that goes from the battery to the starter, make sure the connection is clean and not charred/burnt.

If it still won't start it could be a bad solenoid if not that..then bad starter

Aspirin? What, you think the battery has a headache??? I have tried all sorts of things and have had zero success in 'rejuvenating' a battery with a shorted cell. Prices have gone through the roof on batteries (and tired - 100% increase) in the past couple years (thanks, wash DC...) but you might find a usable one in a boneyard. Check each cell using a VOM by probing from post to cell, then cell to cell, then cell to post with the meter set on DC volts. They should all be pretty close in voltage unless a cell is bad.
That said, I repeat that if the engine cranks and turns over but will not fire when fuel is provided, directly into the intake to be sure there's something to burn, then you likely have an ignition problem, either wires, switch or ignition module. You may check for voltage at the coil(s) while cranking to see if the ignition switch is providing full battery voltage or if it is going to zero while cranking. With the key ON, there should be volts at the coil(s), (in most FoMoCo systems).

If you haven't changed the positive cable I would.
