We have the 98’ Ford Ranger extended cab 6 cylinder with the automatic transmission and we’re looking for a camper shell so we can take the dogs anywhere and not worry about them jumping or falling out the back. I thought I’d appeal to the masses and see if

• Is there a universal shell that works for the Ford truck bed
• Do the different years matter (say 89’-98’ or 97’ to 2019’) as far as the size and design of the truck bed for installation porpoises of the camper shell?
• Finally would anyone have a helpful website address they could leave for good information and or products on the subject?

Thank you in advance

No idea but there are two in south Texas for rangers on Facebook market place

Check Craigslist for a camper shell. A camper shell for a 98 Ranger will fit a Ranger from 83-99. I believe they changed some dimensions for the 2000-2011 models. A camper shell for a 2019 or newer Ranger won't fit a 2011 or older, completely different trucks.

Lucky for you, you have a 6 foot bed, the most common...My 87 Ranger is a 7 foot bed, try finding one for that size bed LOL...took me a while but found one for $100 that needed a rear window, new struts, and the hinge reattached...for $476 I have a great camper shell....you can find them out there cheap...might even hit up the local pick a part yards, sometimes you'll find some in there too for $100 or less as most of them are fiberglass so there's no scrap value to them.

As far as online options...Craigslist and maybe Facebook Marketplace if you care to deal with Facebook. I found my shell listed on Craigslist at a local trading store that sells vehicles, farm machinery, etc.

Very helpful, thank you!

Yes, be glad you have the regular bed. I have the step side bed and I have the same issue trying to find one around me, as wildbill.

ive got a canopy for sale off my 91 short bed it needs a couple small things fixed but other than that its fine

Technically '83-11 will fit since the inner bed was the same for all years with a short bed, like said you just need to look for a 6' bed not the 7' or step side beds. A '93-11 will fit better since the cab shape changed in '93

stepside beds (ok-flare side) have got to be the hardest caps to come by, I have 2 longbed caps I got free, one I found on craigslist & the other just happened to be by the road with a “free” sign on it. Chances are if I had a stepside I wouldnt want a cap anyhow.

How does one know a truck bed is a 6/7 foot one? I got a '95 truck ranger single cab, that i have been looking for how to install the camper shell

Welll in a word...tapemeasure...

Other than that a quick glance at the gas cap door. The 6 ft bed the gas door is only 5 or 6 inches from the front. A 7 ft is about 10 inches from the front
