transmission stuck in 4th gear 2.3 manual 5 speed

Driving home stopped at light went to go and would not change gears. The shifter moved like it was changing but no change Trans was stuck in 4th gear. I removed trans & no fluid in box, all gears looked good and no metal in bottom. How can I tell if every thing is good before I put it back in?

I( had this happen to my 91, take the shifter handle off and the corresponding cover off the trans, shift the forks back into neuitral by hand and then reinsert the shift lever. it just popped out, most likely,
