transmission problems on a 1996 Ranger 4x4 4liter

Hi I recently bought a 1996 Ford Ranger supercab with 4 lit engine auto trans
The trans is shifting strangely,when going from first to second it feels like it is trying to shift to second but takes 3 or 4 seconds for it to fully shift to second then on to third right before it shifts the rpms go up a little then it shifts a little hard,then it shifts to od relatively fast and smooth.
I need some help here as to what it sounds like is the problem and how to fix it.

also as well ,as a first step which would be prefered, a transmission flush or just a transmission fluid and filter change ?

First check the fluid. Wipe some from the dipstick onto a clean white paper towel and let is sit for a few minutes. If you see a black spot in the middle after the rest of the fluid has been soaked up, just start looking for a trans.

Thanks,I guess the black spot would be a metal shaving left over after the fluis soaked up ?

Yup. The black spot you are looking for would be fine metal shavings that won't absorb into the paper. That would indicate time for a new transmission.

I really don't expect you to find that. That level of destruction/wear usually causes much more severe issues that just hard or sloppy shifting. It's just a quick and easy test that you can do at home.
