Transmission compatibility

Hello new to forum and owning a ranger
first and foremost sorry if this question has already been asked but i have a 1991 ranger 2wd with the 2.3L eight plug engine and my transmission has shit the bed on the stickers its a F17a Ka on the sticker
in my search for a replacement i have found in a junkyard near me with a 96 ranger 2.3 or 2.5 that is 2wd the sticker on the side denotes f57a aa i have also found a post online for a trans out of a 94 ranger 2.3 2wd with a sticker denoting f67a aaa from what i have read i think both of these will work but i am looking for confirmation and any help would be greatly appreciated

i had read that post and a few other as well but my transmission mine is an m5r1 or M50D-R1 2WD that was ran dry of fluid evidently in the way that the first gear looks. from reading that what i understand any manual 4cyl 2wd transmission will work as replacement to the one in my ranger am i overthinking this by looking at the manufacturing stickers on the side of the trans ?

the lima block (all the 'old' 4 cyl) and the cologne block (2.8,2.9,4.0L) have different patterns.
So if you find a M5OD-R1 behind a 2.9 (the most common) it wont work (since the trans has the wrong mating bellhousing pattern).

You need to find another M5OD from a 4cyl donor for an exact swap, but yes one of the older FM's should work.
Look at the door sticker and under the hood (glance to verify 4 cyl) to narrow it down to 4 cyl and Code "M" if you want a M5OD.

that link broncc posted has the door code lookup if you want to add the FM's to your search - I don't remember em off hand.

Those are all in interchange records for your truck. M5OD was used behind the 2.3 Lima 88-97 and 2.5 98-01. The question is when did it loose the mechanical speedometer drive?

That is very helpful with the info I received yesterday I believe I found one that will work out of a 94 2wd with the 2.3 Lima engine that is 150 bucks and looks to be in great shape internally if that falls through I will definitely go with one of the units you sent thank you greatly if you don't mind me asking aswell how did you find this info ?

I figured that out at the pull a part near me I found a 91 with a 30 but I realized starter was on the wrong side thankfully before I pulled it out of the truck

You pretty much can grab a manual from a ~88 through '98 4 cylinder Ranger 2 wheel drive and be fine but after about '95 you need to grab the whole shifter because it's different, you can tell when the pinch bolt goes front to back versus side to side, or is it the pivot pins front to back versus side to side? one of the two... after '97 or '98 the speedo cable hole went away otherwise you could include through '01

Also along the years the slave cylinders changed, just get the right one for your year and go with that or you have to do too much monkeying with the hose and master cylinder...

Thank you all for your help I got the transmission put into Tuesday night with a new clutch throw out and pilot bearing as well as master cylinder while I was under i changed the oil pan gasket aswell and she's back running perfect
