I have a 88 Ranger XLT 2.9 EFI Eng, A4LD Transmission & looking to find out how to identify the type of Transfer case. The problem I have is, while driving down the road yesterday (22Nov08) the trans gave out.

Checked the trans fluid, added 2 Qts & as adding the 2nd qt, it was noticed the tranny fluid was coming out of a vent tube near the back of the trans. :bawling:

I spoke with a Ford friend earlier today, described the problem to him of what happened & so forth. He explained that I have the A4LD Trans & the front seal of the transfer case went to lunch. I spoke with 3 different parts stores today, & all 3 asked what type of transfer case is in the truck, but ni ine (including myself) knows how to ID the transfer case at all.

Any help would great. Engine problems I am ok with, however when it comes to transmissions, I am totally lost.:icon_confused:

No sir, no "surgery" was done on it, I spoke with the original owner to confirm this earlier today. Now my next question is, is this seal hard to change out & do i need to drop the tranny also or no?
there is a tag on one of the bolts holding the case together that has the name and model on it but you should have a 1350 unless someone has done surgery:icon_welder:

You can just drop the Tcase. It will be easier if you take the transmission crossmember down and support the tranny with a jack to lower it a little bit and give yourself more hand/wrench room around the tranny extension housing/tcase.

There will be 5 bolts. once you have them out, you may need to fight a little bit to get the alignment pit to separate but it will come right down, first out half an inch, and then once free of the alignment pin it will rotate down on you and you can pull it off of the tranny. Be warned, the tranny will try to dump the rest of the fluid thats in it on you.

As far as changing the seal goes, I have not done an input seal yet. I just went down to look at a spare tcase I have downstairs. I think you may be able to get away with just pulling the front plate on the tcase. It will be 6 more bolts and it should pop right out. The planetary gear will come with it, if it doesnt, you have other big problems.

You will be able to see how to replace the seal from there. The only other concern will be the reassembly and getting the gear set to line up with the ring gear in the case and the shift collar.

I highly recommend taking the tcase and finding a way to support it so that the input shaft is vertical such that you will lift the front plate straight up. This will help keep the shift collar centered and should help it go back together a bit easier.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!
