Im debating on swapping a 302 into my ranger or just sticking with the 4.0 my transmission is bad ive found a AOD and a A4LD tranny for cheap but my question is will the aod bolt right on to my 4.0? And will a A4LD from a 2.3 bolt onto a 4.0? Ive heard from multiple people the A4LD is junk but if its less work id rather buy a A4LD. But if the AOD will just bolt on what would it be a better buy?
http://sd.craigslist.org/pts/4719777743.html or should I just buy a 302 with tranny for 1300$ from this same guy?
The early A4LDs did have problems(1985-1989), in 1990 when the 4.0ls came out the A4LD was changed and became a not so bad transmission, so yes they "were" bad but that changed.
As said you need to get an A4LD trans from a 4.0l, 2.3l won't work, and it should be from a '90-'93, 2.9l will work, same bolt pattern as 4.0l but '90-92('92 was last year of 2.9l).
And 2WD or 4x4 matters, that must match your vehicle.
In '93.5 A4LD got computer controlled OD so your '92 computer may not be able to control that, not sure.
Good read here on the Ranger Automatics:

Read article by Gloria Roosen under A4LD section.
Important part:
"When having an A4LD rebuilt, there are a couple of things that you need to make sure of.
First and foremost, do not let a shop do a soft parts fix only (clutches, servos, and bands). This will almost ensure that you will have another repair needed right after the 1-year warranty is out."
Engine swap also requires computer and wiring swap, so best thing is to find an older Explorer with V8 and body/interior damage, buy it cheap, and use it as a donor vehicle.
