You know I want to believe toyota vehicles are dependable and fuel efficent but i think being #1 is finally getting to them. I have no problem saying I have seen nice yota trucks and reliable cars... but the recent recalls and then this...

http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/autos_content_landing_pages/1352/ap-impact-toyota-secretive-on-black-box-data/

Apparently they knew about the brake and gas pedal thing for a while and have been reluctant to do anything about it... and from this it seems like they were trying to cover it up. That is just wrong and really shady.

The other thing that makes me mad is they are all fuel efficent and stuff, which may be true, but... for them to make one hybird it takes more energy alot more energy! then just a regular gas vehicle so you actually kill the enviornment by getting a hybrid you may redeem yourself by driving it but by the time its worth it you need to change the batteries on it and the cycle repeats (this isn't just the prius any Hybrid is like this). Then the truck, and Suv's many come with big gas guzzling v8's now. the highlander, sequoia, tundra... thats not fuel efficent. And I really don't like the look of the new tundra or anything...

Yeah I hope this doesn't turn into a big super debate.

I don't want people arguing that fords better then toyota... tahts not what i'm on about, just that any company that does this weather it toyota or some other company they really shouldn't do this kinda crap.

i think this is a lesson for all auto makers, they all had mistakes they could avoid

nissan for example had issues with a precat burning on the 2.5 engines.
the burnt particles were aspirated back to the engine. how? the exhaust valves were designed to open a bit on intake so the exhaust fumes could get back inside the cylinders for a recombustion. those particles damaged the cylinder walls and piston rings.
lots of engines had to be replaced and if u replaced the manifold for a header then u could fail emissions and registration tests or engine warranty voided.

I did a Report on the Pinto for college.

Supposedly, a $6? rubber bladder (when installed at the production line - similar to that used for self-sealing tanks on WWII aircraft) would have avoided a very large amount of deaths from those things.

FoMoCo. said:
One of the tools that Ford used to argue for the delay was a "cost-benefit analysis" of altering the fuel tanks. According to Ford's estimates, the unsafe tanks would cause 180 burn deaths, 180 serious burn injuries, and 2,100 burned vehicles each year. It calculated that it would have to pay $200,000 per death, $67,000 per injury, and $700 per vehicle, for a total of $49.5 million. However, the cost of saving lives and injuries ran even higher: alterations would cost $11 per car or truck, which added up to $137 million per year. Essentially, Ford argued before the government that it would be cheaper just to let their customers burn!

I had better sources in my paper, but this site pretty much sums it up.

ALL the companies try to cover up mistakes and crap like this. Now that's shady.

Funny part is...GM is going through a massive recall on faulty brake lines. Now here's the funny part I was talking about: the brake lines were manufactured by a subsidiary of Toyota.

I think this is going to cause a lot of people to lose their faith in Toyota. Having a recall this size is bad enough but keeping vital information like this is even worse.

And try telling a hybrid owner that their car really isnt that good for the environment. Trust me, they dont listen even though its pretty obvious.

What subsidiary of Toyota makes brake lines? I ask because Toyota sources their own brake lines from outside contractors.

Toyota may possibly have defects, although I wonder how many people were pushing the gas when they thought they were pushing the brake, which was the case with Audis about 10 years ago.

Frankly I think the govt is piling on because 1) every Toyota sold is potentially one less GM car sold and the govt owns GM and 2) Toyota is a non-union company and the UAW owns the govt. .02.

If the govt would simply ban the automatic transmission we wouldn't have this problem.

One more thing that no one has brought up. The number of recalled vehicles isn't the number that are broken. It's the number to manufacturer wants to come in to make sure they aren't broken. When Ford recalls hundreds of thousands of vehicles, not nearly that many are actually in need of repair. Same with Toyota.

I have never seen a congressional hearing over a voluntary recall.

I thought this was a power steering issue (related to the Cobalt / G5 / oversees equivilant)

Do you have any data to support this claim?

you may redeem yourself by driving it but by the time its worth it you need to change the batteries on it and the cycle repeats (this isn't just the prius any Hybrid is like this).

The batteries last the life of the vehicle. When hybrids first came out, everyone said the batteries wouldn't last and they'd cost a fortune to replace. Well, they been around for over 12 years now and guess what....nobody has had to replace the batteries!! There are literally thousands of people with over 150k-200k on the original battery. Toyota say the battery lasts the life of the vehicle....AND IT DOES. The battery actually has a 10 year/100k mile warranty. Even IF you had to replace the battery after that period, you can one out of a junkyard for about $300.

being that i work for a HONDA supplier company, i see the toyota problems as a benefit to me, some may now choose honda over toyota. as far as the pinto thing, id own one, i dont worry about what may happen if its crashed in to, your driving a compact car, you get hit by something bigger, your just going to be hurt worse than they are thats all there is to it, bursting into flames will only guarantee that it will be "totalled" and you can start over again without waiting for something to be repaired. im sure there is all kinds of stuff going on to save money, by all companys. toyoyta is just the one that got busted for saving a buck and not dealing with the problem.
