Too Loud

So this 93 Ranger I just bought, 3.0 w/ automatic. Has a Magnaflow muffler, 1 pipe in and 2 out, the duals look good and sound great at idle, Almost like a V8. but when you accelerate its BLAAAAAAAAAAH, so loud I can't take it. Any suggestions for something with 2 outs so I can keep the duals, but maintain a little more civil tone and volume?

a glasspack isnt going to tone the truck down much.

id recommend replacing the muffler with something quieter. most popular muffler companies make their mufflers available with a range of input and output combos. a slowmaster 60 or 70 series would probably sounds ok.

i would just say, put some turn towns right off the muffler, i have a flowmaster 44, and it is VERY loud when i dont have anything after the muffler, but i put the turndown on (to prevent the exhaust from raising the bed or something that i heard) and that made it alot quieter in the cab, but kept the same sound to people outside of the truck

i second the super 44 series from flowmaster. put it on last night and it was LOUD!!!!!!! too loud for my liking..put on some extra pipe and a turndown, quiet in the cab and still gurgles away at idle and engine braking :) :) absolutely recommend this one..but yeah, to get it quiet, get the flow away from the cab under the bed or out the side/back.

turn downs sound stupid and are a terrible way to help quiet a vehicle. having the exhaust exiting under the vehicle traps the sound between the underside of the vehicle and the ground, where is just bounces back and forth and causes terrible resonating sounds. if you want to reduce the sound inside the vehicle, make the exhaust exit out from UNDER it, if it doesnt already (i assumed it did in my first post).

not sure what sounds you are talking about..mine doesnt sound much louder than a stock exhaust..but to the outside, it roars...

but it still does a temporary job..and exhaust work is all about personal preference as well. My Flowmaster sounds just dandy with a turn down until my pipe comes in to dump it before the tire..my old muffler took a shit so i had to put on the new muffler sooner because its too loud without one for MY liking. but ya i agree if you're gonna do anything to the exhaust, have it piped out to the side or rear - looks cool too :D

They make a HUGE beyond HUGE difference over just having the exhaust end under the truck as a straight hunk of pipe. My dad had a truck that just had glasspacks and the drone would almost make it impossible to drive, a set of turndowns easily fixed that.

I don't think they sound all that bad, not as good as they could by having a full exit but they are a cheap, low damage risk alternative.

I have no reason why others don't like the Flowmaster, I do.

I've read an article that stated that Flowmaster was one of the worst flowing mufflers you can buy. But they didn't give any results.. I've read a lot of opinions that state they flow like syrup.

Ah, here it is:
"According to the flowbench, two of the best flowing units you can buy are the Walker Dyno Max and the Cyclone Sonic. They even slightly out flow the straight through designs from HKS and GReddy BL series. Amongst the worst, are the Thrush Turbo and Flow Master mufflers. We'll flow some of the newer mufflers as they become available at our local Chief auto."

i read the article, and will stick up for flowmasters BECAUSE this article is for the import/tuner/ricer scene. nothing at all to do with the vehicles we drive on this forum. i know that mufflers will not give you horsepower, but an intake/exhaust system, when matched appropriately, will add a little gut to a rather gut-less engine (like my 2.3L). I highly doubt the flowmaster will do good for a 4 cyl. engine size less than 2.0. But it gives a great sound/tone to it. I believe that SOME points in the article are great, but it is NOT appropriate to right off ANY brand of muffler just because it doesn't work on some "ricer's" honda civic. Thats prolly all they have done to the car; throw on a muffler and say "shit! my car is faster than anything!!" when its actually just louder because they still have a stock manifold and piping.

"tuners" know that without proper piping, a muffler won't get you anywhere. There really IS more restrictive stuff on engines than the muffler.

And I understand that's your opinion, and yes, I agree that they didn't give specific model #s. But from my perspective, a muffler is a muffler and a flow bench is a flow bench. That's doesn't have a lot of bearing on whether or not it's going in a Nissan or a Ranger.

Edit:
My main point was in reference to the post that indicated that a lot of pople didn't like flow master mufflers, all I posted was into reference probably why. And like I said, there's been a lot of reference to them flowing like syrup just from general posts.

And I do agree that it's not going to make a HUGE impact whether they run a DynoMax or Flow Master. FWIW, I am running a Dynomax, but not because of that article. I found that later on and thought it was a little ironic..

Edit:
And since most ricers are 4-cycle engines, it really doesn't matter what it's gear to... Since Rangers are 4-cycles as well. The same principals apply.

hey i am not trying to bash..every man/woman is entitled to whatever muffler they prefer as just slapping on a muffler doesn't give you horsepower..its all up to preference, just like the raising/lowering debate of rangers. You are absolutely right that a muffler is a muffler..all they do is muffle the sound/tone coming out. my counter argument is this, however. There is a BIT of a difference (albeit not very BIG i think) between certain 4 cyl. engines. The 3.0L and 4.0L both are V6 engines yet they have two different tones. Same principal, but this is MY point. Its back to preference, where you will never be right or wrong i guess.

sorry if i offended though!

anyone else notice the 3.0 trucks being a little louder?i put a flowmaster 40 1-into-2 on a friends edge and its louder than the same thing on my 4.0.

i have turn downs after the rear axle though and i do notice some annoying resonance at times.but its out of harms way,oh well

EDIT:hey pete- whats the walker sound like compared to the flows?
