Too Loud

anyone else notice the 3.0 trucks being a little louder?i put a flowmaster 40 1-into-2 on a friends edge and its louder than the same thing on my 4.0.

i have turn downs after the rear axle though and i do notice some annoying resonance at times.but its out of harms way,oh well

EDIT:hey pete- whats the walker sound like compared to the flows?
Noticed my 2.9 was noticeably louder than the 4.0.
Here's a bunch of my videos with various flow 40 exhaust setups on my 2.9.

crap, sorry guys i can't watch vids or even listen too sounds on this cpu! guess i should have said that.

i have the super 44 on my truck, and for some reason my mom can hear me a mile away, and i have the cats and full length dual tail pipes, but the noise in the cab is pretty quite really

turndowns do sound terrible. go with a flowmaster 40, nice tone at idle and not too loud when your on it

yeah, differant engines create differant harmonics. mainly do to # of cyl. (naturally) and whether it's a long/short stroke.
not always true, but in general for the most part looking at the tach. vehicales with low rev limit = long stroke, higher rev limit = short stroke.

the 3.0 is an oversquare engine, meaning the bore is greater than the stroke (in fact, it has the same bore and stroke as the SHO 3.0), which gives it its raspy, and loud exhaust note. its got a similar raspyness as a ferrari motor..also oversquare.

the 4.0l is 3.9x" by 3.3x" making it more "oversquare".i wonder how much the cat and exhaust design plays?

I would vote for ALOT.

My brother's 4.6L and my dad's 400 (6.6L) are both square engines, but sound nothing alike.

I know different exhaust manifolds on the same engine will effect the sound, so the rest of the exhaust system would do the same... and I bet different head configurations play a large role too.

Well I thought I'd check in on this thread and can't believe all the reply's. Definitly the longest one I've ever started. For those interested, I had the Magna flow removed, and installed an aftermarket, no-name muffler made to fit Ranger, one in one out. Added a Y-pipe on the back side to feed into the dual pipes that were already there. The results (for me) are great. It still has the low rumble at idle, but does'nt get much louder as I accelerate. At cruising speed you can hear the rumble, but it's low and you can still carry on a conversation in the cab. I don't have to worry about waking up the neighbors with it anymore.
